IN TIMES OF CHANGE,Memories (that beat like a second heart), Life’s Dance of Moments, 3 Poems by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Grief has a way of inducing tunnel-vision. When heartache hampers progress, find discipline in breathing,
openness in loving, and simple honesty in writing; human life is precious.

IN TIMES OF CHANGE (Tankas)

Serendipity
was involved in what happened
When I feted you
but it gave me no pleasure
losing contact with your soul
.
So I tried shaping
the shifting times to suit us,
to build a safeguard
around the soft parts of you,
those parts prone to impairment
.
But all I did failed,
the colors began fading,
the blossoms fell, and
the fictions I’d once embraced
became a strangling hindrance
.
How does one cope with
an overwhelming sorrow,
a consuming storm,
when all you feel depletes you
and writing is not enough
.
But there was hope, still,
(I thought) in all these struggles,
life’s trying seasons
challenging ev’ry human
willing to search the unknown
.
Now,
.
each day I press on,
eager to write something new,
even as heartache
impedes my reaction to
livings wild rage of echoes
.
There’s a place for friends,
when forgetfulness deepens,
a place in the heart
where memories of closeness
remain strong in times of change
.
You will always be with me…

I began understanding myself (and my place in life) far better after almost destroying myself. And in the process
of fixing myself and healing, I began recognizing who I really was. Love and wisdom are the keys.

Memories (that beat like a second heart)
.
Come twilight, come mist,
These ever-changing heavens
inspire me to purge
what suppresses loves heartlight
and stays a healthy minds thoughts…
.
Knowing life’s mistakes
were only a life lesson,
not a life sentence,
.
We’ve espoused a way,
you and I, where hope remains,
notwithstanding these
fraught thoughts churning within us,
come they shall, in time they must
yet love will still deliver us
from all that grips us deep within
and stays the hand of reason
.
Come twilight, come mist,
this dark cerulean sky
seeks to arouse us
as the night draws us closer
in a flame of enchantment
.
To again regain
simple sensibilities,
notwithstanding these
broken days that plague us yet,
come they shall, and so they must
still wisdom will deliver us
from all that plagues us deep within
and causes us to suffer
.
Some days, I relive
my hearts deafening silence,
where hard memories
dwell within what they quicken,
and beat like a second heart…

“Why…. you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears
a little while, and then vanishes.” James 4:14 NIV.

Life’s Dance of Moments

‘Water-man’ image was taken at Lake Ellery in the Sierra Nevada
outside the Tuolumne Meadows. Ekphrastic.
.
Michele and I
watch, as snow pure
streams worm down over
the grays and reddish umbers
of mountain granite,
both of us
charmed with the
fleetingness of shapes,
and how it streams freely
around and throughout all it
touches, and how the musicalness
of flowing water (to our ears) embodies
the wayward lightness of moments…. And
.
as we test various
angles and shutter speeds
(hoping to capture
the magic
of moments)
the flow suddenly
strengthens, and an
odd water figure appears,
sitting stoically staring at us shifting
in the briefness of streaming seconds…. Then it
.
becomes clear how
life moves in moments,
and how with each breath
there is constant action
in all things (visible
and invisible) as
nothing in creation
ever remains motionless….
a dance of moments
in the Creator’s
breath, in which life’s
greater lessons and mysteries
can be understood at times simply
as the moon’s reflection floating in
an old water barrel, or in the
heavy drops that form on
leaf tips, (as fleetingly
beautiful as a
mother's tears)
or how in each droplet
exist a myriad of microbes
and soulish reflections that all
surrender to the swish and swirl
of living’s ephemerality’s….
.
Life’s dance of moments fades so fast
the scent of time in mem’ry’s cast
reminding us of all things past,
the days pass quickly,
the night turns dark and vast,
but nothing remains… nothing lasts….

NOTHING REMAINS (AS IT’S SEEN) Haibun by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

HAIBUN is a prosimetric literary form originating in Japan. Haibun is a terse, relatively short prose poem in the Haikai style, usually including both lightly humorous and more serious elements. A Haibun can be the narrative of an epiphany, and usually ends with a Haiku or Haikus. richard lloyd cederberg

NOTHING REMAINS (AS IT’S SEEN)
.
See the moons reflection on the pond, in the bucket of water, in the droplet that has grown heavy at the leaf tip. The reflection does not get wet, nor is the surface of the water broken. The mind reflects on this reflection as the moon follows its nightly arc. The reflection changes, the process ends, and then begins anew.
.
As all mortal eyes
Capture only what’s fleeting,
So words do as well,
In ways inexplicable
Nothing remains (as it’s seen)
.
My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle. They pass like a shadow at evening. A vigorous western wind blows dead leaves east where they gather against walls, stairs, and prickly pear cactus. A brisk eastern wind blows dead leaves west where they gather against chain link fences, trees, and along the shoreline. Life’s panoply of arrival and decay.
.
only my dreams can
wander these arid deserts
where no thoughts exist
.
For we are only
of yesterday, and know naught,
because these days on
Earth are only a shadow,
an unyielding paradox
.
As all mortal eyes
capture only what’s fleeting,
so words do as well,
in ways inexplicable
nothing remains (as it’s seen)

Monsters. A Poem by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Monsters…

Throughout history, in every culture; monsters continue to prevail, horrify, and fascinate. Syllable format – (4-4-6-8-6)

The life he led
one day (he said)
was boring dull and scant,
but using scary images
he found a stimulant

Such awes (he said)
imbue the brain
with such a special dread,
the Balrog or the Jabberwock,
the Yeti and the dead

Avoid the dark
(he said) dismayed
hearts icy depths perturb
there’re strange and twisted creatures there
it’s best not to disturb

My heart could fail
(he’d weep and wail)
there’s so much discontent,
but Grendel and Medusa still
he found were scintillant

The Giant Squid
of Jules Verne
for certain fuels a fright,
the Minotaur and Wendigo
stand strong in fearsome might

The Nephilim
an evil race
worst monsters in the lot
are known for eating anything
such wickedness they brought

Leviathan
and Fenris too
new horrors they conceal
that keep us wond’ring if at all
they’re fake or if they’re real

Those in my head
that day (he said)
seem diff’rent than the rest
but never did that stop his pen
or lessen all his zest

And so, he wrote
with hearts delight
of monster’s blood and gore
and all the crazy fears they’d bring
that kept some wanting more…

Dispossessed (a Lieutenants defense) Poem by Richard Lloyd Cederberg

Characterization. A creative adaptation from personal real life encounters.

My family seems
Perplexed with
The kind of person
I’ve become.
How I live,
These hands of mine,
My fingernails and rings,
This old pea-coat and worn shoes,
The weatherworn skin, and long hair…
But look at me,
What do you see?
Are these the EYES of insanity?
NO! They’re not! They’re the EYES
Of ‘I don’t give a shit’ anymore…
You copy that?

Oh…
Sorry ’bout it.
I’m plain-spoken.
What’s that?
You don’t care?
You want me to be open?
Ok…
Well…
I’m a Vet.
Vietnam.
First Lieutenant.
Air Mobility Assets.
Battle of HO BO Woods’ what changed me,
1966. 1st Bn, 27th Rgt, 25th Division. 25 killed,
32 wounded, ceptin’ me, I lived. Me!
What’s that? An occupation?
Yeah!
I was a Professor of Philosophy and
Economics for fifteen years before
The pricks punched my number.
Why?
Never really knew.
Too forthright I guess.
I realized early on I was training young
People to be slaves in a soulless machine
Whose only purpose was to churn out Automatons
For the global work-market and a lifetime
Of servitude and tax paying, so I began
Teaching what the students needed
To be creative happy citizens;
But them a’ holes didn’t like that…

What’s that?
My name?
Whiskey Sierra Papa!
Yeah! That’s my name.
What?
My personal philosophy?
Are you kidding me?
Really?
Wanna nip ‘a hooch first?
No?
Well… ok.
Here’s to ya’ stinkpot.

So here’s how I see it…
I began
In convergence
Just like every other human,
A divine revelation, (perhaps) or
A sperm lucky enough to find the egg,
The passions of MALE and FEMALE merging,
A momentary lapse of morals
(Possibly)
Finding a kind of fruition,
Without scrupulous filtering,
Or evolutionary impediments,
Or something more cryptic
To equivocate things even more,

I became something unique,
BIRTHED
Just like you,
Against all odds
And all wars that
Raged against possibility,
I became ME (in a world of ME’s)
Endeavoring to be apprehended, in
Spite of all booby traps and busybodies…

Ever coping to realize
A consummate expression,
(Whether accepted or not)
Another ego espousing humility,
An idealist treed in a shitty-system
Repudiating man’s despairing struggle to
Be more than just a hollow-sound in a global
Village of meez and yuze vying to one up
The swarms of prigs all maneuvering to
Lord it over everyone around them,

YEAH! That’s how Whiskey Sierra Papa sees it.
Huh? Sum it up?

Ok! On and on it goes, pal,
In this world of friends and foes,
And regardless where the river flows,
And despite who thinks I’m just another
Wayward f… who made a lotta bad choices,
I have found this one concept truly unfeigned,
That until MY leaf falls from the tree,
I will continue being ME… Dig it!

Hey… you wanna nip ‘a hooch ‘for ya’ go?

ALONG CAME THE SPIDER. A Poem by Richard Lloyd Cederburg

Once upon a time
A verdant originative landscape
Apportioned gems of creative insight
To all seekers, freely, without compunction,
And uniqueness of individuality was adopted as
Intelligently sought after development burgeoned…
It was a magical place thriving as
A field of geodes broken open in wonderment,
People, as special treasures, imbibed as nourishment,
Working collectively to instigate a better world, to heal,
To enlighten, to entertain, offering insight into
Realms unknown…
It was a time
Filled with colorful purpose
Which thrived and shown as the sun…
In it people shared and responded
As a community respectfully
Imbued with aethers scent,
Ancient folklores
Tickling
Tantalizing
Creative souls unthreatened
By another’s inexplicable penchants
And all on the cutting edge of breaking waves
Sharing honestly in whiteness of spirit
Unthreatened without agenda
Without hatefulness
Or any desire to feel superior to all the
Flowers majestically carpeting similar fields…
~~~
But despite all the good
Along came the spider and
The subtleness of degradation
Cast its spell furtively,
A drop here
A drop there
A pinch of leaven
Subverting foundations
Fixed in a place unguarded
An unkind word stomached
2 unkind words getting even
Endeavoring after easy money
Territory pissed on and killed for,
Youth tattooed, scarred, perverted,
Directionless, dead, or incarcerated
Aberrant hoods regarded sacrosanct, a
Melting pot of democratic mayhem flailing,
The prejudicial redirection of Light and Truth
By all naysayers and intellects, a Modern clerisy
Allowing the onset of grays and alternative-people
To lessen output in an anything goes society polluted
With cretins offering execrations to diminished deities
With hollow chanted words, fingering illusory rhythms,
Machiavellian ideas malignant
In shitholes, predators
Taking snort at
The next line of blow
Bopping in blurs of whimsy
Around the smirking golden calf
System bound puppets drooling as a
Randomly placed arrow pierces the third eye of sanity
And all frolicking in and around the Carnac Stones and every
Other megalithic rock edifice where mysterious geo-magnetic
Meridians interlace the Earth in an ancient World Wide Web
Have we been down this road before?
Pure Air (readings of nature and life) Poem by Richard Lloyd Cederberg
Pure Air (readings of nature and life)
Word-painting the sights and sounds of ephemeral scenes. Three sunsets in three different locales.
__________________________________________________________________________________
“I know that our bodies where created to thrive only in pure air, and the scenes in which pure air is found. There is not a fragment in all nature, for every relative fragment of one thing is a full harmonious unit in itself.” John Muir. From: ‘A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf’. 1916
PART 1 – COASTAL PROMONTORY
.
Twilight lastly wanes.
Darkness, like a window
Shade, slowly descends
upon the surroundings…
.
Within moments a pall
of mist has coalesced; a
moist residue feathering
‘round about…
.
Almost imperceptibly;
the sounds of Gulls and
Sandpipers drift into the distance…
.
Mingled with a shifting of
ocean breezes, goose-bumps move
like tiny wheels, in waves of trembling,
up and down the spine…
.
Squinting eyes observe
a diaphanous mist forming halos
‘round the shifting coruscation of
distant streetlights…
.
Steady, in the northernmost parts,
the moon rises from behind a transom
of steep ridges onto a glistening inlet…
.
With slivers of serpentine
Incandescence; moonlight hastens
upon the footpath in a wash of
pallid vividness…
.
We watch, in cooling night air,
as the lesser light frolics on the
Ocean’s surface in ashen flames…
.
From the imbiber’s pantheon,
across the boulevard, laughter’s cacophony
echoes fitfully across sand and water…
.
Slowly, the nomadic path of
nighttime envelopes both of us in a
cloak of darkened cerulean hues…
.
PART 2 – LAGUNA MEADOWS
.
Setting sun extends
shadow fingers across
the vast meadows…
.
Broadening shadows blanket
drought-parched grasses
in a dimming shroud…
.
Balanced in thirds
and sevenths, twilight’s
Heart tones sketch the day’s
memories in pallid brushstrokes…
.
Scrub-jay, Quail, Raven, Sparrow, Chickadee,
and Mud-hen sing exuberantly, across the lake,
in a chorus of salient transition…
.
These nocturnal cantatas
wrap the soul in a chorus of
elevated harmony…
.
Remembering sunlight’s warmth;
soaring affections succumb to
the panoptic chill of eventide…
.
With the threshold crossed,
two spirits spread their wings
and take flight into the radiance
of an unsullied moon…
.
PART 3 – ACTIVITY ABOARD THE BARQUE – SUNSET
.
Across far-flung horizons –
below the suns apex – hues
of late afternoon commingle with
the easily swayed aspects of moments…
.
Burdened from rising pressures,
surface water furrows like wrinkled
old fruit, as storm-clouds form west
along the Northern Shorelines…
.
Aboard the wooden Barque:
passenger’s rollick on the leeward deck
where beamish stewards serve snacks, and
budding libertines eyeball possibilities…
.
The measured clicking of heels echo
near the fo’c’sle where eager faces float socially;
and where, in shifting breezes, the long flaxen
hair of youth hover’s naturally…
.
A resonance of laughter widens
‘round long-stemmed flutes; amber
liquid splashing drops along rounded
glass edges smudged with lipstick and spit…
.
The eyes and ears draw all these
darting fragments (of sight and sound)
into the mind, so the adventurous soul can
paint with words in subtle or bold images…
.
Time takes us there,
where light and dark commingle,
where hope and fact ignite the flames
of understanding, and where each
breath is present and past…
.
Continually morphing, in light and shadow,
the line of night traverses the rounded surface.
Slowly, in fluid motion, the once resplendent sun
gradually dips down into another time of respite…
BIOGRAPHY
Richard is the progeny of Swedish and Norwegian immigrants. He was born in Chicago Illinois. Richard began his journey into the arts at age six. For twelve years he played classical trumpet. The British incursion of music, however, influenced him to put down the trumpet and take-up acoustic and electric guitar, and, to write songs and lyrics. He toured professionally for ten years. In 1995 Richard was privileged to design and build his own Midi-centered Recording Studio ~ Taylor & Grace ~ where he worked diligently until 2002. During that time he composed, and multi-track recorded, over 500 compositions and has two CD’s (‘WHAT LOVE HAS DONE’ and ‘THE PATH’) to his personal credit.
.
Richard’s interest in writing continues. His poetic invention is integrative and employs various elements: nature, history, relationships (past and present), parlance, alliteration, metaphor, characterization, spirituality, faith, eschatology, art, and subtext. Avoiding the middle-road; he enjoys the challenge of poetic stylization: Rhythmical, Poetic/Prose, Triolets, Syllable formats, Story-Poems, Freeform, Haiku, Tanka, Haibun, and Acrostic. Richard’s work has been (and is) featured in a wide variety of anthologies, compendiums, and e-zines including: Poetry Life and Times, Artvilla, Motherbird, and The Path. Richard was nominated twice for the Pushcart Prize.
.
Books include: 1. A MONUMENTAL JOURNEY… 2. IN SEARCH OF THE FIRST TRIBE… 3. THE UNDERGROUND RIVER… 4. BEYOND UNDERSTANDING. The Monumental Journey Series is a confluence of adventure, mystery,  and historical fiction. A new adventure/thriller, BETWEEN THE CRACKS has been published. Also, a new eschatological drama – AFTER WE WERE HUMAN – is being written. Follow the lives of several friends as a race of ageless multi-dimensional humans comes back to Earth with their Creator to rule and reign for 1000 years.
The Real Friendships. Poem by Richard Lloyd Cederberg.
THE REAL FRIENDSHIPS Dedicated to a friend and a cancer survivor
It was all too much (for me)
To bear, staring out across the valley
At you supplicating earnestly for more
Of life to share, for more time to
Live, to express freely…
And in your
Own quirky way
Owning another season
Guaranteed free from defects
Was what I hoped for fervently
Another chance
(Perhaps) for you
To make some sense
Of all that would be pulled,
Eventually, from the wreckage
Of what had forced you down along the
Edges of life’s fragile looking glass
Being thankful for
The real friendships;
Those few you cuddled in your
Heart when living got serious, or when
You’d reached wits end alone again, somehow
Confiding in the trustable, and now accepting that what
You’d always struggled to believe was all that made sense
And all you purposed
To hear was [a wise voice]
Encouraging you to walk this way,
Or that way, telling you to listen only to
Those elect who drank from the purest streams, and
Reminding you to give thanks for having NOT been born in the
Days of antiquity when people suffering (with the invisible)
Were often left to perish on windswept crags
Withdrawn. An Ekphrastic Poem by Richard Lloyd Cederberg
Ekphrastic – composed with triolets
“It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth”
WITHDRAWN
I’m not the one I used to be
Who broke the rules and pushed the bar
Who never wavered, can’t you see
I’m not the one I used to be
But now since much has changed in me
I’ll dream but never go too far
I’m not the one I used to be
Who broke the rules and pushed the bar
I’m not someone of naïve quest
Espousing all that’s given me
Nurturing all my hearts unrest
I’m not someone of naïve quest
But if I’ve not somehow possessed
The art of sweet simplicity
I’m not someone of naïve quest
Espousing all that’s given me
I’m not the one I used to see
In stirring flames and mountain streams
Artless on a raging sea
I’m not the one I used to see
But if I’ve struggled just to be
A somber shawl of unsung dreams
I’m not the one I used to see
In stirring flames and mountain streams
I’ve become withdrawn with age
Beguiled with simple fare
Inspired more to disengage
I’ve become withdrawn with age
Nevermore to war and rage
Against this life unfair
I’ve become withdrawn with age
Beguiled with simple fare
