Janet Kuypers’ Chicago WZRD Radio 8/23/17 2-part poetry feature & interview

Janet Kuypers’ Chicago WZRD Radio 8/23/17 2-part poetry feature & interview

On August 26th, 2017 (on her last full day visiting Chicago since her move to Austin, Texas in October 2015), Janet Kuypers was a selected feature on Chicago’s WZRD Radio (88.3 FM), and on this Sunday poetry radio show Janet Kuypers was interviewed not only at the beginning of the multi-hour radio show but also at the end of the showcase, which was not only broadcast live but was also made available as a set of SoundCloud audio releases and a set of YouTube video releases (a good portions of part 2 of the interview was also released as a live Facebook stream).

During both parts of the interview, Janet Kuypers not only talked about life since leaving Chicago and moving to Austin (and her multiple features and poetry readings monthly in Austin). Specifically because she knew she was coming back to Chicago on the same week she was scheduled to photograph the total eclipse of the sun 8/21/17, she also had released through Scars Publications two Janet Kuypers poetry books of poetry she had written while living in Austin, “(pheromemes) 2015-2017 poems” and “(pheromemes) 2015-2017 show poems”. At the time of the radio show airing, these books were released from the first printer (which printed only in the U.S.), but by mid-September 2017 these books were also released through a second Amazon-affiliated printer, then printed for easier shipping not only in the U.S., but also in the U.K. and all of Europe.

Janet Kuypers’ “This Just In” 8/22/17 poetry feature @ Chicago’s Gallery Cabaret

Chicago poet and Austin resident Janet Kuypers returned to Chicago for a week in August to coincide with the August 21st total eclipse of the sun (where she traveled to southern Illinois to photograph the event). During her stay she was honored with the opportunity to guest host the open mic she rand for over half of a decade in Chicago (then titled “the Café” at the Gallery Cabaret) as well as perform her feature show “This Just In” for Poetry at The Gallery Cabaret (2020 N. Oakley Ave. in Chicago – one block east of Western Avenue and one block north of Armitage) Tuesday, August 22nd 2017.

Because Janet Kuypers knew she was coming back to Chicago the week of the total eclipse of the sun (and because she had no book releases of her poetry for years, ever since she moved TO Austin), Janet Kuypers was thrilled that Scars Publications was able to release the first printing (from a U.S. printer) of two new books of hers, of poetry she had written while living in Austin, “(pheromemes) 2015-2017 poems” and “(pheromemes) 2015-2017 show poems” (the second book of poems she wrote for features she has had in Austin). Since her return from this trip, Scars Publications has also released the second printing of “(pheromemes) 2015-2017 poems” and “(pheromemes) 2015-2017 show poems” (from an Amazon affiliated printer, with sales from printers in the U.S., the U.K., all of Europe, and also Japan). Everything she read in her show was from these two books, and she also sold proof copies to audience members after the show.

Below are video links and poem text links from the July 1st 2017 (7/1/17, or 20170701) poetry performance “Our Cultural Independence and Achieving Global Freedom” (accompanied by Hotel Music “Amongst Hills” from the HA!Man of South Africa) of Janet Kuypers’ Austin poetry feature through ”Expressions Supports Cultural Independence!” at Austin’s the Bahá’í Center.

In this show, Janet Kuypers decided to tackle different forms of freedom and independence, as highlighted in her first poem “fader, his mädchen and the Führer”), about giving rights to a Socialist (and rapidly becoming Fascist) government, read to her recorded music of playing an electric bass with a bow. The HA!Man of South Africa’s “amongst hills” then played foe the remainder of her show, when she then switched gears by talking about freedom from oppression and independence from sexism in “of independence or freedom”, before moving to new poems about independence from idolatry in “Xerostomia”. Her final longer poem then tackles searching for cultural and intellectual independence and respect in “Utopia never happened”.

Before leaving her Chicago home to live in Austin Texas, someone told her (which she left as a note on her desk, and was the impetus for her writing her twitter-length poem “you were meant”), “you were meant to do big things, which you are.” This note, when used s a reference to women, was the perfect title for her woman-themed show “Meant to do Big Things”.
