Memory Loss Poem

Share

Short Term Memory Loss

Ears of sweet corn
on the kitchen counter,
empty pot
burning on the stove;
you, seated
at the dinner table,
enjoying ice cream.

Alzheimer's
(Holding On)

I dreamed about you last night,
as you were yesterday,
standing in the bathroom,
afraid to get in the shower.
I helped you undress,
then, together, we stepped in,
hand holding hand,
faces lifted up to the water,
toes digging into the tiled floor,
to keep you from disappearing
down the frightening, silvery drain.
