Audioboo \/ Infusoria (poem)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Having swum in the ocean of stars<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

calling them Gods\u2014their campfires, their monumental <\/span><\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

sorrows, our bliss at a faith-conceived heaven\u2014<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

we are driven back by heavy gales.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

*<\/p>\n

Few living creatures inhabit these broad<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

flat-bottomed valleys, abode of kingfishers<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

grass-hoppers, lizards\u2014not much else <\/span><\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

a ruined fort in a dull brown landscape.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

*<\/p>\n

Relief to find a small stream threading<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

clefts of rock, greening, here and there,<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

otherwise barren soil. Onwards then, to a flat plain<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

stunted acacias\u2014until a flock of guinea fowl.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

*<\/p>\n

Anxious panorama of time: jagged cliffs,<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

lava-rock, distant mountains enveloped in <\/span><\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

dark blue clouds. It\u2019s coming: the storm<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

of the modern. <\/span><\/span>The monkey likes bananas.<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

*<\/p>\n

I\u2019m collecting dust: the air is ion charged,<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

flashes of lightning, the will to see<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

the infusoria: African sunsets, the question <\/span><\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

of microbes, my lens, my imperfect vision.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

*<\/p>\n

And then another island\u2014fertile, volcanic<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

red cinder hills, everything slopes toward the<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

interior. But I will paddle the rock pools<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

notice: sea slugs, cuttle-fish all arms and suckers.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ian Irvine is an Australian-based poet\/lyricist, fiction writer and non-fiction writer. His work has featured in many Australian and international publications, including <\/span>Fire<\/i><\/span> (UK) \u2018Anthology of 20<\/span>th<\/span><\/sup> Century and Contemporary Poets,\u2019 (2008) which contained the work of poets from over 60 nations.<\/span>His work has also appeared in a number of Australian national poetry anthologies, and he is the author of <\/span>three books<\/span> and co-editor of many more (including <\/span>Scintillae 2012,<\/i><\/span> an anthology of work by over 50 Victorian and international writers and poets). He currently teaches writing and literature at Bendigo TAFE and Victoria University (Melbourne) and lives with fellow writer Sue King-Smith and their children on a 5 acre block near Bendigo, Australia.<\/span><\/strong>
