Rain will remember.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So when you fall in love, right, you sing it out<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Like a big green frog under the water, your eyes<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Bulged out with passion, your froggy mind cool as<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">The rain, your empty heart full of compressed air,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">And the Muses text you you are fucking up and by heaven<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">You need to emerge like one of those happy whales<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">At Sea World, ravenous for a small dead fish.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So you text back, O Motherly Muses, Queens of Life!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Blessed spirits of high imagination! OK, I\u2019m coming,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Thrashing my flippers, always obedient, O yes, ma\u2019am,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Damn, I need air, love needs oxygen, ah, ah, ah,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I always wondered how old Beowulf managed,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Swimming ten miles in an upward direction,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Clutching Grendel\u2019s cumbersome head and the hilt<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Of some ancient giant\u2019s mis-inherited sword,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">But up you go, with all that love, oh wow, that love,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">About to explode you, to pop you, although<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As a frog, you can handle the mission, kick those legs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So that\u2019s why I don\u2019t talk much about love<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Except to the hummingbirds flying in from death.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><i><b>(St. Thomas More replies, through a cloud of smoke)<\/b><\/i><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>El Santo:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Wait a minute, there, (cough) Your Majesty,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Up in those mountains it may well be true<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">That death communicates from nowhere to you,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">But here in Heaven, by gosh, it seems to me<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">That death is silent; in this guy\u2019s poetry<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">He mentions that mistake that Judas made,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">And I fucked up, too, and good faith betrayed<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">When I tormented heretics vigorously,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So now in painful purgatorial remorse<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I write fourteeners day and night and then<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">I scan and rescan all my lines again,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">And the sonnet is my only intercourse.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">So love, you say, by way of conversation,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Is no more than a kind of frog inflation?<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>El Rey:<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">Sustenance comes in diverse disguises,<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">As we say down in the sierra, and<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">No one really wants their head chopped off<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">By a dude whose slaves put powdered gold<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">In his single-malt milkshake\u2014too bad<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\">He got you, my saintly friend. W. Haynes, Professor of English at Texas A&amp;M International University, has published poetry in many journals in the United States and in other countries. As an academic scholar, he specializes in British Renaissance literature, and he has also taught extensively in such areas as medieval thought, Southern literature, classical poetry, and writing. Since 1992, he has offered regular graduate and undergraduate courses in Shakespeare, as well as seminars in Ibsen, Chaucer, Spenser, rhetoric, and other topics. In 2004, Haynes met Texas playwright\/screenwriter Horton Foote and has since become a leading scholar of that author\u2019s remarkable oeuvre, publishing a book on Foote\u2019s plays in 2010 and editing a collection of essays on his works in 2016. Haynes also writes plays and fiction. In 2016, he received the SCMLA Poetry Award ($500) at the South Central Modern Language Association Conference In 2019, two collections of his poetry were published, <em>Laredo Light<\/em> (Cyberwit) and <em>Let the Whales Escape<\/em> (Finishing Line Press).
