\r\nShe rose from her makeshift rustic bed\r\n\r\nand strained her eyes in the morning sun\r\n\r\nshining through termite-eaten windows.\r\n\r\nDrank a glass of basil water and then made\r\n\r\nher way up a trail on a tough terrain\r\n\r\n to the forest overlooking the Sunkoshi River\r\n\r\n to collect fodder for her cattle.\r\n\r\nAn old kerosene lamp hangs in the window\r\n\r\nof an abandoned building and carved wooden deities\r\n\r\nflank a rickety gate. Poor eyesight, back permanently bent\r\n\r\nfrom the burden of heavy loads, feet deformed\r\n\r\nand ravaged by walking barefoot on rough terrain,\r\n\r\nshe looked older than her ancestral deity on a hilltop nearby.\r\n\r\nDry corn leaves rustled underfoot. She picked one\r\n\r\nand rubbed it in her palms, smiling at herself\r\n\r\nand kneeled down to quench her thirst from a\r\n\r\nlittle burbling creek neighboring her path.\r\n\r\nThereafter, she hastened her pace humming\r\n\r\nher favorite song, sung by her mother\r\n\r\nwhen she was young.\r\n\r\n\u201cPlant a tree, then another, then many more. \r\n\r\nMaybe we will be able to cleanse the world.\u201d\r\n\r\nEvery time when she hums this song,\r\n\r\nshe feels her mother humming it with her too.  \r\n\r\nWhistling, she walked deep inside the forest \r\n\r\nand soon her doko was fully fodder crammed.\r\n\r\nShe looked at the deep blue sky and grinned\r\n\r\nas a little girl with rhododendron flowers\r\n\r\nin her hands high up in the Himalayas\r\n\r\nand then sauntered slowly down the hill,\r\n\r\ncarrying heavy doko on her back with the namlo straps\r\n\r\non her forehead smiling at her neighbors\r\n\r\nshowing her uneven teeth, as they prepare\r\n\r\nto spread animal fertilizer on their fields.\r\n\r\nOn the back of her polka-dotted cow,\r\n\r\nthere was a little bird.\r\n\r\nThe cows mooed loudly after seeing her.\r\n\r\nShe fed the cattle and then went inside the kitchen\r\n\r\nto cook dal, bhat and tarkari.\r\n\r\nIn the adjoining room, her hungry children were\r\n\r\nalready getting ready for their school. <\/pre>\n
