\r\nGET THROUGH<\/strong>\r\n\r\nI imagine myself\r\ninside an Edward Hopper panting,\r\nsitting in a diner\r\nalone and motionless,\r\nthe black coffee getting cold,\r\nwaiting for something\r\nwithin me to change \r\nwhen suddenly the atmosphere\r\neases and I hear\r\na trumpet sound\r\nplayed by a lean,\r\ncool Chet Baker\r\nembracing my silent mood,\r\nreaching out across \r\nthe evening shadows,\r\ntouching my sleeve,\r\ntaking me along\r\nwith those strong adjectives of music\r\nwhich climb and soar\r\nabove the oppressive\r\nstreets and traffic,\r\ntelling me calmly of a way\r\nto get through.\r\n\r\nON TOUR<\/strong>\r\n\r\nWith one glimpse\r\nKeats manages\r\nto catch in a June letter\r\nthe Welsh mountains,\r\nhis motion of days\r\non tour,\r\nmoving swiftly\r\nnorthwards\r\nhe remembers Lancaster\r\nwith its cacophony of shuttles,\r\na transition brought\r\nby new experiences of activity,\r\nan action travelling \r\nforwards in thought. \r\n\r\nAN AFTERNOON IN THE PLACE DES VOSGES<\/strong>\r\n\r\nAfter the vortex of Parisian\r\nstreets and traffic,\r\nwe sat inside the calm square\r\nwhere lunch-hour workers\r\nrelaxed and fledgling infants\r\nplayed near a peaceful museum,\r\nonce Victor Hugo's house.\r\nDays that are windows\r\nreflecting the supreme air of spring,\r\nas an incorrigible bird\r\nsang its unrehearsed notes\r\nwith an admired optimism.\r\n\r\nTHE WINDOW<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe continuous search\r\nfor the room with a view,\r\n\r\nto wake one morning\r\nclear-headed with naked eyes\r\n\r\nto witness the promise of a breathing landscape,\r\noptimistic yellow, garden-mint green, peaks of orange.\r\n\r\nI\u2019d watch the delivery of colours,\r\nlisten to a delicious language\r\n\r\necho from purple hills,\r\nwords pausing on a table-top\r\n\r\nas the sensuous air embraced the limbs of the trees,\r\na prepared windowpane\r\nclearing itself like the tone of a determined voice.\r\n\r\nFORT CORNWALLIS, PENANG<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe heat of an afternoon\r\nenters with a trade of tourists;\r\n\r\nconception's myth entertained\r\nby a deliberate pose\r\n\r\nnear a barrel's erect \r\neye filled with flowers.\r\n\r\nWithin a defensive wall\r\nrebuilt by convicts you can sense\r\n\r\nthe swell of commands,\r\nperspiration draining from captured pores,\r\n\r\na pungent aroma of sea breath,\r\nthe sway of lost time,\r\n\r\nthinking of families \r\nthey'd never see again.\r\n\r\nAn uneasy warmth\r\nstalks the mind like a predator,\r\n\r\nabout to flare up,\r\npoised to strike an oppressive blow. <\/pre>\n

Several collections, including The Echoing Coastline<\/em> (Agenda) and Where Shadows Stir<\/em> (The Seventh Quarry Press) which was launched at the birthplace of Dylan Thomas, Swansea in February 2023.\u201d <\/p>\n
