THE TIME OF NOSTALGIA<\/p>\n

We went to visit our old neighbor
\nafter they moved her to a nursing home,
\nan old English lady of ninety-one,
\nstill with that accent of east-end London
\nand the sweet pleasantness of the kind.<\/p>\n

She was too old, too alone to live alone.
\nShe would forget to turn off the gas range
\nor how to turn on the thermostat or TV,
\nShe had trouble following a simple talk,
\nbut remembered the Blitz, 75 years past,
\nas if the Nazi bastards were still at the door,
\nand London was in turmoil: as though Hell
\nhad crashed through the gates of Heaven.<\/p>\n

So her family moved her, leaving empty
\nthe house next door, empty of our friend
\nof 30 some years, empty of her lilting
\nEnglish accent and her sharp sense of
\ngood old fashioned English humor\u2026
\nand it seemed like someone had died.<\/p>\n

After a few weeks we went to visit her,
\nmy wife and I, taking some sweets and
\na small plant– oh yes, and our sadness
\ntoo– though we made sure to leave it
\noutside, unattended to for the moment.<\/p>\n

We entered a very large and rambling
\nsort of building, with pleasant lawns
\nand locked doors and intercoms for
\nsome voice to decide if you can enter.
\nIt was like sort of a prison, you think,
\nbut a very nice and very clean prison.
\nOur neighbor was in a special wing,
\ncalled rather romantically, \u2018Cedar Cove\u2019
\nand as we entered through yet another
\nset of stout doors, we greeted her and
\nshe smiled back, but very much as
\none might greet a total stranger\u2026.
