{"id":8402,"date":"2023-10-09T19:58:37","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T19:58:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/?p=8402"},"modified":"2023-10-09T19:58:37","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T19:58:37","slug":"5-sonnets-from-the-poetry-of-r-w-haynes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/5-sonnets-from-the-poetry-of-r-w-haynes\/","title":{"rendered":"5 sonnets from the poetry of R.W.Haynes"},"content":{"rendered":"<pre>\r\n1]\r\n\r\n<strong>The Knife and the Retreat<\/strong>\r\n\r\nOne awaits the knife, not that that\r\nIs all that dramatic, cathartic, or just.\r\nBut anticipation can miss surprise in the dust\r\nAnd there it pops up, wagging its hat.\r\nAnd that\u2019s the great crisis right then, of course,\r\nThat jolt of suddenly being unprepared\r\nTo cope with emotion one had never cared\r\nTo consider might land with unexpected force.\r\n\u201cI\u2019d rather be a Stoic,\u201d old Wordsworth might say,\r\nHis teeth clamping down on his old corncob pipe,\r\n\u201cThan be clotheslined to whimper and to gripe\r\nWhile my sweet fantasies evaporate away.\u201d\r\nNow retreat and recover, live, do not die.\r\nBe that imagined hermit, lonely by the Wye.\r\n\r\n\r\n2]\r\n\r\n<strong>The Cliffside Stroll<\/strong>\r\n\r\nHer sonnets struggled along the cliffside path,\r\nShells and flowers tracking her aimless way,\r\nAs a dark spirit followed in shadows of the day,\r\nAnd blue jays whispered, choking back their wrath.\r\nBut the bright sun vanquished in the blue sky,\r\nAnd earthquakes held themselves in control\r\nAs she nibbled wafers and prayed for his soul\r\nA little, and watched the hungry seagulls fly.\r\nBelow her, breakers gnashed at the rock,\r\nAnd old prayers ascended upward as mere mist,\r\nAnd memory quietly reft how they\u2019d been\r\nOne sweet time, never to come again,\r\nSince they\u2019d looked at each other and kissed.\r\nBut now the jays can resume their clamor\r\nAnd earthquakes swing their devastating hammer.\r\n\r\n\r\n3]\r\n\r\n<strong>Barks<\/strong>\r\n\r\nSo there is madness in exaggeration\r\nAnd some cold, bold sanity, too.\r\nGet unexcited by unthinking silence\r\nTill the dogs start barking madly at you.\r\nThey know, these dogs, what\u2019s in your mind.\r\nThey hear everything, and they\u2019re not blind.\r\nThey smell all the aromas of violence\r\nAnd long for the bite of imagination.\r\nIt is the bark of time that philosophy\r\nAvoids waking us with to keep us free\r\nFrom madness and unleashed disorientation,\r\nOne kind of wisdom, our mortal enemy.\r\n\r\n\r\n4]\r\n\r\n<strong>Last Conversation<\/strong>\r\n\r\nDo we mix admiration and regret\r\nFor prudence managed half-heroically?\r\nFor half-blind pleasure felt half-painfully?\r\nHa ha, no paradise has come here yet,\r\nNor has a fatal drama played for us\r\nWith gestures, shouts, soliloquies,\r\nDevastating recognitions\u2014no, none of these\r\nHas come, no, no bother, no fuss.\r\nOne turns away, right, when warning lights\r\nBlink in the guts, and one\u2019s breathtaking act\r\nOf false control works to distract\r\nDestructive impulse as it wildly fights.\r\nAnd, O you craven philosophic Judas,\r\nYou let the grinning Fates come burn and loot us.\r\n\r\n\r\n5]\r\n\r\n<strong>The Quicksa-a-a-and of Laughter<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<em>One cannot keep writing sonnets.<\/em>\r\n\t\t\tTennessee Williams\r\n\r\nThe double-Debbie\u2019s dud dude did\r\nWhat he could and whenever he could\r\nAnd sped sometimes up to no damn good,\r\nAnd they all laughed hard wherever they hid,\r\nLaughing like lobsters with haha like crows,\r\nIn musical moonlight uttering chuckles and snorts\r\nAnd torrents of turbulent hilarious sports\r\nIn musical starlight until the sun rose.\r\n\u201cThe operation of masks,\u201d he nervously spoke,\r\n\u201cIs best done by women, whose all-wily wits\r\nConfound men\u2019s arguments and logical fits\r\nLike music the mad game of mirror and smoke.\r\nGet away, Cassandra!\u201d he shrieked in agony.\r\n\u201cAll right, brother\u2014have you no faith in me?\u201d <\/pre>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/heidegger-looks-at-the-moon-collected-poems-rw-haynes-reviewed-by-robin-ouzman-hislop\/haynes-hati\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7938\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Haynes-Hati-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7938\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Haynes-Hati-228x300.jpg 228w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Haynes-Hati.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>R. W. Haynes, Professor of English at Texas A&#038;M International University, has published poetry in many journals in the United States and in other countries. As an academic scholar, he specializes in British Renaissance literature, and he has also taught extensively in such areas as medieval thought, Southern literature, classical poetry, and writing. Since 1992, he has offered regular graduate and undergraduate courses in Shakespeare, as well as seminars in Ibsen, Chaucer, Spenser, rhetoric, and other topics. In 2004, Haynes met Texas playwright\/screenwriter Horton Foote and has since become a leading scholar of that author\u2019s remarkable oeuvre, publishing a book on Foote\u2019s plays in 2010 and editing a collection of essays on his works in 2016. Haynes also writes plays and fiction. In 2016, he received the SCMLA Poetry Award ($500) at the South Central Modern Language Association Conference In 2019, two collections of his poetry were published, <em>Laredo Light<\/em> (Cyberwit) and <em>Let the Whales Escape<\/em> (Finishing Line Press).
