\r\nEvery morning\r\n\r\ndank scuffling begins\r\n\r\non the edge of our roof\r\n\r\nas hungry pigeons\r\n\r\nleave their nearby\r\n\r\nshrinking shelters\r\n\r\nand rush towards\r\n\r\nour old Kathmandu house\r\n\r\nwhen my mother calls\r\n\r\nthem as usual,\r\n\r\nchirruping to them\r\n\r\nin a high melodic note,\r\n\r\n\u201cCome, come, come pigeons.\u201d\r\n\r\nThen they lean over\r\n\r\nthe solar panel\u2019s rusty edge\r\n\r\nand look at us\r\n\r\nwith dark shiny eyes\r\n\r\nand wait for the\r\n\r\nsudden appearance\r\n\r\nof the manna.\r\n\r\n\u201cBreakfast?\u201d we ask.\r\n\r\nThey lower their head rapidly,\r\n\r\nspring off to the floor\r\n\r\nand start picking the grains.\r\n\r\nFinished, they fly off.\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s goodbye till we\r\n\r\nwake up the next morning\r\n\r\nto recreate the same scene\r\n\r\nonce again.\r\n\r\nLeaning against the wall,\r\n\r\nI take a sip\r\n\r\nof lukewarm herbal water,\r\n\r\nand exchange glances\r\n\r\nwith the colorful birds\r\n\r\nflying low above me\r\n\r\nin the gorgeous morning sky.\r\n\r\nTheir habitats are waning\r\n\r\nin the face of global warming\r\n\r\nbut I can no longer pretend\r\n\r\nthat things won\u2019t  be fine\r\n\r\n for them, for us. \r\n\r\nThis generation\r\n\r\nis growing up\r\n\r\nwith a lot more\r\n\r\nreverence for nature\r\n\r\nand I believe\r\n\r\nin the extraordinary power\r\n\r\nof human connections.\r\n\r\nSuddenly,\r\n\r\nthe wind howls.\r\n\r\nFallen pigeon feathers\r\n\r\nand chocolate wrappers\r\n\r\nlitter the terrace floor\r\n\r\nand a squirrel swirls past my legs.\r\n\r\nKathmandu is still sleeping.\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s not Saturday\r\n\r\nbut the city seems eerily silent.\r\n\r\nAround me, the painted deities\r\n\r\nsneer and snarl.\r\n\r\nHigh above,\r\n\r\na flock of pigeons\r\n\r\ncoronet the sky. <\/pre>\n
