Teetering Toward Sattva<\/strong>\r\n\r\nMy friend\u2019s mother would tell him, I created \r\nyou and I can destroy you, as though, like Parvati\r\nwith Ganesh, she had literally made him\r\nfrom a mixture of earth and her perspiration, brought\r\nhim to life with her breath. \u015aaivasamprad\u0101ya\u1e25 believe \r\nShiva is the creator, preserver, and destroyer\r\nof the cosmos. Does that mean mothers\r\n\r\nare his avat\u0101ra and children their miniature\r\nmultiverses? I wouldn\u2019t know. I\u2019m not a mother. Mine\r\nmay have been a god to me when I was little\r\n(it\u2019s likely she was) but I remember her \r\nas my universe. One I destroyed over and over\r\nwith the choices I made, huddled and weeping\r\nand bereft, my days-old sweat a blend of scotch\r\n\r\nand cigarettes and dirt from the alleys where I\r\ncrouched for decades. Now those years have passed\r\nand so has she. Neither creator nor destroyer,\r\nshe preserved her dreams for\/in me and I live them \r\nwith her hands, callused, dry-darkened\r\nat the knuckles, soft, cool. They wash away the grime\r\nso I can live for today. So I can live for us both. \r\nSo I can live.\r\n\r\n\r\nAnteyesti<\/strong>\r\nto Anay<\/strong><\/em>\r\n\r\n\r\nYour body burns\r\nas your mother weeps\r\nher son into a letter.\r\nI read it, edges \r\nfluttering in the summer \r\nwind like wings, like the ashes \r\nwe scatter\r\nin the canyon\u2019s river. She asks\r\nwhy you wanted to melt\r\ninto memory, fleeting \r\ndesert snow beneath\r\nthe sun of our hot grief.\r\nAnd in that brutal \r\nlight, she begs \r\nfor rain to swoop down\r\nand flood her cracked earth.\r\n\r\n\r\n(\u2026 As We Know It)<\/strong>\r\n  Reset: Kritayuga Begins Again<\/strong><\/em>\r\n\r\n\r\nWhen the apocalypse\r\ncomes what becomes\r\nof the astronaut who floats\r\nin the space station and sees\r\nthe sun as it really is \u2013 a silvery\r\nwhite flare, incandescent\r\nas fireworks arching over\r\nour greening blue Earth? <\/pre>\n

Kalpita Pathak<\/strong> is an autistic poet, novelist, and advocate with a passion for research and sensory-rich details. Her work tends to explore the perseverance of hope in a sometimes despairing world, with a little dark humor and magic added to the mix.
