\r\n         Marie<\/strong>\r\n\r\nOh Marie, you are\r\nan aging wreck;\r\nyour dangling dugs,\r\nyour languid wrinkled Miss Muffet\r\nwon't bring the milkman early;\r\ndirty and smelly\r\nslattern of the month, \r\nthe epitome of\r\neverybody's discarded laundry.\r\n\r\nLapses in motor function\r\nmental focus \r\nget you to the streetcar  \r\nlate every day\r\nand late to work;\r\nbooted out\r\nsooner or later\r\nwhen you get home\r\nwhat will he say?\r\n\r\nWhat a burden\r\nfor our pity and revulsion;\r\nyou're frightening\r\nin your squalor.\r\n\r\nNight and day\r\na dead soul\r\nan endless round \r\nof apathy and despair,\r\nwhat kind of life is that?\r\n\r\nThat's what we think.\r\n\r\nBut some rare times,\r\nGod knows why\r\nsomehow roused,\r\ntriumphant \r\nbetween the bed posts\r\nlike a shaky marionette \r\nyou rise and fall\r\nto the challenge\r\nof bleary marital bliss;\r\nfor those few moments \r\nassertive queen, \r\nsweating with your\r\nhirsute timorous king\r\ndismantling him,\r\ncannibalizing him,\r\nyou burst forth new-made,\r\nking and queen together,\r\namorous two-backed beast \r\nbefore your reign fades away\r\nin the glimmer of tomorrow \r\nand you come apart,\r\nPriapic darling,\r\nagain become \r\nwhat you were.\r\n\r\nAlas, Marie, time's more\r\nthan a placeholder;\r\neater, destroyer\r\nchanging Nineveh \r\nand all of us to dust;\r\nfalse fellow traveler\r\nrubbing us out\r\nof our space and place\r\nbefore we know it. <\/pre>\n

Jack D. Harvey\u2019s<\/strong> poetry has appeared in Scrivener, The Comstock Review, Valparaiso Poetry Review, Poetry Life & Times, Typishly Literary Magazine, The Antioch Review, The Piedmont Poetry Journal<\/em> and elsewhere. The author has been a Pushcart nominee and over the years has been published in a few anthologies.<\/p>\n
The author has been writing poetry since he was sixteen and lives in a small town near Albany, New York. He is retired from doing whatever he was doing before he retired.<\/p>\n
