The two poems draw on a trip through the northeastern part of Arizona and to our well known Canyon de Chelly, the jpgs are\u00a0of some watercolous that are “abstractions” with the red rock landscape in mind that match what happens in the poems. <\/em> David Chorlton<\/strong><\/p>\n

 \r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\n\r\nCanyon de Chelly<\/strong>\r\n\r\n\r\nThe rain turns around and begins\r\n\r\nto flow back into the sky. A low cloud\r\n\r\ngrips a mesa with its talons\r\n\r\nand pulls it from the surface of the Earth\r\n\r\nrevealing one more red rock canyon\r\n\r\nfilled with souls. The walls are marked by clawing\r\n\r\nwhere they tried to climb out.\r\n\r\n                                               History\r\ncurls up at the edges\r\n\r\nand the open spaces tear apart as easy\r\n\r\nas ripping up a treaty.\r\n\r\nA dark heat settles over the land.\r\n\r\nThere are no ladders any more\r\n\r\nto reach houses built into\r\n\r\nthe walls, but those between the houses\r\n\r\nand the sky\r\n\r\n                  remain in place\r\n\r\nfor access to join a hawk in flight.\r\n\r\nEasy now to navigate\r\n\r\nthe cliffs, circle columns rising\r\n\r\nfrom the stony ground, and balance\r\n\r\non the heat. To fly\r\n\r\nand not be followed, settle high\r\n\r\nwhere nobody can reach\r\n\r\nand be a spirit leaving when\r\n\r\nthe body can\u2019t hold on.\r\n\r\n\r\n\"\"<\/a>\r\n\r\n\r\nNavajo Landscapes<\/strong>\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\nThe road remembered glides\r\n\r\nwith no effort across\r\n\r\nflat country that ends in a brushstroke dragged\r\n\r\nalong a sky soaked in water\r\n\r\nwhere the weight of it\r\n\r\nrests while the edges bloom into the land\u2019s\r\n\r\nimagination.\r\n\r\n                   Rocks the ground\r\n\r\ncan no longer contain\r\n\r\nstand up as landmarks for anyone\r\n\r\nwho needs to know\r\n\r\nwhere they are going,\r\n\r\n                                   but which\r\n\r\ndirection hardly matters.\r\n\r\nThe landscape\u2019s inner life reveals\r\n\r\na kind of loneliness. It\u2019s easy\r\n\r\nto feel lost where the Earth arcs\r\n\r\nand the sun is balanced\r\n\r\non its highest point\r\n\r\n                              like the destination\r\n\r\nat journey\u2019s end, when the way\r\n\r\nthere is by holding\r\n\r\nto the underside of a cloud\r\n\r\nas it follows the broken yellow line\r\n\r\nto infinity.<\/pre>\n
