\r\nSpice Rack<\/strong>\r\n\r\nLate nights a festival vendor\r\ndictates his gospel\r\nat my spice rack,\r\ntent preacher pacing\r\nin perfect pitch.\r\n\r\nHe makes a list,\r\nrecites it under his breath:\r\nwhorled Sage branch tiered\r\nin tulle fluffy skirts,\r\nbalmy light cloudy vanilla,\r\ncinammon the color\r\nof summer's skin,\r\nsmoky paprika curves\r\nin roof tiles in tropical sun,\r\nrough and tumble red pepper flakes\r\nheat and rumble of fast cars\r\nand slow hands,\r\nthe rough cumin sash on ranch hands\r\nover campfires.\r\n\r\nHe pauses and pulls a snake\r\nbarely wiggling\r\nfrom a badger skin bag,\r\na petroglyph stick at the top,\r\nthrows it in boiling water\r\nand we watch the unraveling,\r\nthe releasing of substance,\r\nthen skims the surface\r\nand mixes the miracle.\r\n\r\nThe snake gives up her secrets\r\nand he bottles them\r\nwith my crushed spices,\r\nlabels it in beard bone font:\r\n\"For the cure of all pain.\"\r\n\r\nSisters<\/strong>\r\n\r\nIn a minimal city\r\nwell versed in matters\r\nof rumors and gossip\r\nsisters carry fruit baskets\r\non their heads,\r\nlight on their feet,\r\nlimber on their hips.\r\n\r\nPrairie wildflowers\r\nlean on the slant\r\nto the rise and fall\r\nof blue mountain ridges\r\ncapped with the earth's birth caul.\r\n\r\nUneasy roosting\r\non the rituals\r\nof the holy,\r\nthe innermost hidden\r\nbehind half closed\r\nalmond shaped eyes.\r\n\r\nIn unison they read the signs\r\nin a persimmon's innards,\r\nreveal the heart\r\nof winter,\r\nharsh or mild,\r\nsisters know.\r\n\r\nA sister whispers,\r\n\"Gather persimmons at dawn\r\nwhen the tree lets go\r\nof its first ripened fruits\r\nto the awaiting ground.\"\r\n\r\n\"Saigon cinammon,\r\nsweet depth of nutmeg,\"\r\nmumble the sisters.\r\n\r\nThe sacred hidden\r\nin the crumbling language\r\nof ancient recipes\r\ntied with honeyed strings\r\nand mourning doves\r\nheavy with sadness,\r\ntouched by a neatly sliced\r\nsort of love\r\ntender persimmon pudding\r\nto devour as the gods.\r\n\r\n\r\nFestive Messaging Pivot<\/strong>\r\n\r\nI am the bright setting sun\r\nand a thousand wings to fly.\r\n\r\nStars dip by me in quick salute,\r\nmarch in flares and glow around the world.\r\n\r\nMy spirit quickens in a child's hand,\r\nI am flight, speed, and strawberry hearts.\r\n\r\nI am love, a Valentine, a rose,\r\nskipping with high knees\r\nin vast fields outside the lines.\r\n\r\nI am red, a melted planet\r\nforgotten on the dashboard\r\nin summer's technicolor,\r\na festive messaging pivot,\r\napples on the paradise tree,\r\nearly Christmas morning\r\nKool Aid pitcher cherry smile.\r\n\r\nI am Red, Red Crayon.\r\n<\/pre>\n
