\r\n\r\nLiberty in Ashes<\/strong>\r\n\r\nSo many want to be president.\r\nSo few know that it should be\r\nthe protector of the people,\r\nguarding them from oppression.\r\nInstead, these wannabe servants\r\neager for indenture\r\nto the capitalist masters\r\nwho have established control\r\nof the future of America\r\nhaving successfully removed\r\nthe stout-hearted blue collar class,\r\nthe only group determined enough\r\nto resist the blatant tyranny\r\nof voracious oligarchs,\r\nrefusing to give a fair share\r\nto the people who toil for them\r\nwhile they consume the fruits of the earth.\r\n\r\n\r\nGrowth Spurt<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe march of civilization\r\nhas improved life for many,\r\nwho live longer, healthier,\r\nwith luxuries unimagined\r\na few hundred years ago.\r\nAs we evolved\r\nfrom family, to clan, to tribe,\r\nthen made the great leap\r\nto nation states\r\nwe devoured the resources\r\nof a bountiful earth,\r\nuntil we are poised\r\nto destroy the world\r\nin extravagant consumption.\r\n\r\n\r\nHigh Crime II<\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe prison industry,\r\nthe most unproductive industry\r\nin this ailing nation\r\ncurrently incarcerates\r\nmore then a million men,\r\na lot of women,\r\nmore than the population\r\nof some small countries.\r\nThe system employs\r\nguards, cooks, teachers,\r\npsychologists, doctors,\r\nthe list goes on,\r\nall to maintain\r\nadjudicated criminals,\r\ninnocent or guilty,\r\ncustodians or confined\r\nanother pustulant body\r\nin diseased America.\r\n\r\nSimilar or \u2026<\/strong>\r\n\r\nNew Year\u2019s Eve 1968,\r\na terrible year for Vietnamese,\r\nwhile only some Americans\r\nlost loved ones,\r\nas the nation consumed\r\nvast amounts of treasure\r\nthat the oligarchs believed\r\nwould be wasted on the people.\r\nDespite growing inequality\r\nmost of us didn\u2019t notice,\r\nunless our sons were killed\r\nin distant jungles.\r\nWe still didn\u2019t realize\r\nthat the lords of profit\r\nwere abandoning our factories,\r\neliminating blue collar workers,\r\nthe last group to defy the bosses.\r\nYet I seem to remember\r\nit was a good year for Haut Brion.\r\n\r\nNew Year\u2019s Eve 2018,<\/strong>\r\n\r\nthe revelers no longer hulk\r\nin one congested mass\r\njammed crammed together,\r\nthousands drunk, stoned,\r\nmuggers, pickpockets, hoodlums\r\nvisiting their neighbors,\r\nwho still had a great time.\r\nNow people stand\r\nin isolated groups,\r\nregimented in the Age of Terror.\r\nBut despite the lack of drink, drugs,\r\nthey still have a good time.\r\n\r\n\r\nBeset<\/strong>\r\n\r\nA semblance of normality\r\npervades the land,\r\neven for the disadvantaged\r\nstruggling as usual\r\nto make ends meet,\r\nfeed, shelter, clothe\r\ntheir needy children,\r\nwho will never understand\r\nwhy they can\u2019t have\r\nthe same things\r\nas everyone else. <\/pre>\n

‘Double Envelopment\u2019<\/em><\/strong> is an unpublished poetry collection in response to harsh conditions affecting many of our people, who only want a better future for their children.<\/p>\n
Gary Beck<\/strong> has spent most of his adult life as a theater director and worked as an art dealer when he couldn’t earn a living in the theater. He has also been a tennis pro, a ditch digger and a salvage diver. His original plays and translations of Moliere, Aristophanes and Sophocles have been produced Off Broadway. His poetry, fiction and essays have appeared in hundreds of literary magazines and his published books include 3 poetry collections, 14 novels, 3 short story collections, 1 collection of essays and 5 books of plays.
