{"id":806,"date":"2013-06-13T16:24:41","date_gmt":"2013-06-13T16:24:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/?p=806"},"modified":"2019-02-11T06:06:18","modified_gmt":"2019-02-11T06:06:18","slug":"1980-poem-sonnet-mitchell-geller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/1980-poem-sonnet-mitchell-geller\/","title":{"rendered":"1980.Poem.Sonnet.Mitchell Geller."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>1980<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>Before the South End had been gentrified <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>and not a single latte had been brewed <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>on Tremont Street&#8217;s still raffish, dodgy side <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>there was, on Union Park, an interlude <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>of wanton joy we later saw collapse; <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>a brief, Edenic interval of grace <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>before the second-hottest guy at &#8220;Chaps&#8221; <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>bore lurid lesions on his handsome face, <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>and soon, in weeks too sickeningly swift, <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>required \u2015 at thirty \u2015 that bony white cane. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>Six short months and his mind began to drift, <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>in gaunt, enfeebled, piteous waves of pain. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>We soon, alas, grew used to sights like this, <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><b>the idyll having changed to an abyss.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\u201c<b>1980\u201d by Mitchell Geller. This sonnet was previously published in Desert Moon Review and Sonnetto Poesia. <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\u00a0<b>It was one of the winning poems on IBPC: Interboard Poetry Community: Winning poems for February 2008.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><b>Felda Brown of IBPC has this to say about this sonnet, \u201cWhen a sonnet is good, it holds in a great deal of passion, using the struggle of the lines to keep it from flying apart in anguish. Here is a poem, maybe the only one like this I&#8217;ve seen, that eulogizes the &#8220;Edenic interval&#8221; before AIDS began its rampage in the gay communities. The voice in the poem is authentic, the language interesting (&#8220;Tremont Street&#8217;s raffish, doggy side&#8221;) and sometimes perfect&#8211;&#8220;that bony white cane.&#8221; Although the couplet feels weaker than the rest, the end-rhymes &#8220;like this&#8221; and &#8220;abyss&#8221; do exactly what they need to do, pull us into the darkness.\u201d <\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><b>Mitchell Geller (1951\u2014 ) is a poet and essayist. Born and raised in Greater Boston, where he still resides, he has a BA in English Literature, and did his graduate studies in Children\u2019s Literature. His work has appeared in The Melic Review, Sonnetto Poesia, WORM, The Loch Raven Review, Umbrella and 14 x14.
