\r\nMrs. Alving Contemplates Her Nipples<\/strong>\r\n\r\nHedonism governs men, or simple greed\r\nDeludes them always, so these masculine minds\r\nDelight in lies that their convenience finds\r\nSo that for them there\u2019s nothing true indeed.\r\nIf the lies are just nature\u2019s just excretions,\r\nOr by-products of heated oxidation,\r\nI see their value as no more than negation\r\nA healthy memory turns into deletions.\r\nLusty dudes, braggarts, loud buffoons,\r\nImploring forgiveness, tender sacrifice,\r\nThough only my surrender will suffice,\r\nI scorn your swaggering, you groveling baboons.\r\n\u201cMommy! Mommy! Mommy!\u201d These babies cry.\r\nMy nipples are mine now. Big babies, good-bye.\r\n\r\nLike Epictetus on Mushrooms\u00a0<\/strong>\r\n\r\nIf Fortune turns its face toward the sun\u00a0\r\nWhose light takes eight minutes to arrive,\u00a0\r\nThen I put aside impatience to revive\u00a0\r\nFortitude in hope when day is done\u00a0\r\nMy sputtering candle may be noted then\u00a0\r\nFor what it\u2019s worth,\u00a0although its little light\u00a0\r\nTook sixty years of travel through the night\u00a0\r\nTo let its fitful illumination begin.\u00a0\r\nDuty is useless if no mark is made,\u00a0\r\nAnd if the light should vanish, be unseen,\u00a0\r\nAs the Spartan said, I\u2019ll fight then in the shade,\u00a0\r\nDivested of\u00a0incumbrance, darkly serene.\u00a0\r\nTake your insincere sympathies, then,\u00a0\r\nAnd stick them all elsewhere, all the way in.\u00a0\r\n\r\nAnother Ha Ha Chuckle for the Blessing of Rest<\/strong>\r\n\r\nShe thought light would leak on all\r\nTrue dilemmas, personal honor, life or limb,\r\nWhat to cook, what to hide from him,\r\nAnd when she saw some ominous shadow fall\r\nShe knew to relish inevitability\r\nLike an old stone statue staring in a tomb,\r\nSilently satisfied in that silent room,\r\nMutely assimilating shadows she could see.\r\n\u201cMy poetry will get you,\u201d she wanted to smile,\r\n\u201cMy syllabic dynamite, my shapely lines\r\nOf harmony, tangled like wise vines,\r\nMust stack all being in an elegant pile.\r\nBut you, O Diogenes, what you are after\r\nProvokes no more than a brief fit of laughter.\u201d <\/pre>\n

R. W. Haynes, Professor of English at Texas A&M International University, has published poetry in many journals in the United States and in other countries. As an academic scholar, he specializes in British Renaissance literature, and he has also taught extensively in such areas as medieval thought, Southern literature, classical poetry, and writing. Since 1992, he has offered regular graduate and undergraduate courses in Shakespeare, as well as seminars in Ibsen, Chaucer, Spenser, rhetoric, and other topics. In 2004, Haynes met Texas playwright\/screenwriter Horton Foote and has since become a leading scholar of that author\u2019s remarkable oeuvre, publishing a book on Foote\u2019s plays in 2010 and editing a collection of essays on his works in 2016. Haynes also writes plays and fiction. In 2016, he received the SCMLA Poetry Award ($500) at the South Central Modern Language Association Conference In 2019, two collections of his poetry were published, Laredo Light<\/em> (Cyberwit) and Let the Whales Escape<\/em> (Finishing Line Press). Later collected works are Heidegger Looks at the Moon<\/em> (Finishing Line Press 2022 ) The Deadly Shadow of the Wall <\/em>(finishing Line Press 2023)<\/p>\n
