My Voice<\/strong>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nI am Deaf. \r\n\r\nMy fingers speak. \r\n\r\n\r\nA coiffed paintbrush in my grasp, \r\n\r\nmy voice streaks turquoise and magenta \r\n\r\nacross a parched canvas. \r\n\r\nVowels coo through thirsty linen.\r\n\r\n\r\nClick-clacking keys with my mother tongue, \r\n\r\nI chew hard consonants\r\n\r\nand spit them out. \r\n\r\nSour, a scathing sonnet can be at dusk.\r\n\r\n\r\nFingertips pave slick exclamations, \r\n\r\npunctuated by nails sinking low into clamminess.  \r\n\r\nI sculpt hyperboles.<\/pre>\n

Kelly Sargent<\/strong> is an author and artist whose works, including a Best of the Net nominee, have appeared in more than forty literary publications. A poetry chapbook entitled Seeing Voices: Poetry in Motion<\/em> is forthcoming (Kelsay Books, 2022). A book of modern haiku entitled Lilacs & Teacups<\/em> is also forthcoming, and a haiku recently recognized in the international Golden Haiku contest is on display in Washington, D.C. She serves as the creative nonfiction and an assistant nonfiction editor for two literary journals. She also reviews for an organization whose mission is to make visible the artistic expression of sexual violence survivors.
