The Cybernetic Lullaby<\/strong>\r\n\r\n\r\nThey sing softly to us at \r\nEvery click of the mouse\u2014\r\nuse me, I'm here for you,\r\nonly you, in the entire \r\nuniverse will I serve\u2026.\r\n\r\nAnd we lay enraptured \r\nas they bring us the world,\r\nknowledge the wise men\r\nof history never had, and\r\nease, lots of ease to save \r\nus time and trouble. Soon \r\nwe cannot live without them,\r\nthe thought of it too mean.\r\nWithout them we would loose \r\nTouch with our friends, jobs,\r\nEven our money might wander \r\nIf we cannot watch it daily.\r\n\r\nHowever did our ancestors \r\nSurvive without an I Phone?\r\n\r\nPart II\r\n\r\nI read on my laptop today\u2014\r\nAutomation is making us dumber,\r\nIneffective, even maybe impotent.\r\nPerhaps it's a conspiracy by that secret\r\nSociety, the computer brotherhood.\r\n(Do you really believe your Apple is \r\nInnocent and IBM is not plotting?)\r\n\r\nOr maybe we should just blame\r\nHuman sloth, that siren call of \r\nSheer damn laziness which can \r\nLure the best of us to a quiet doom.\r\n\r\nA simple proof: hand a twenty to a clerk\r\nAnd ask him to make change without\r\nLooking to the machine for succor.\r\nThat blank, innocent look he gives you\u2014\r\n\"Why me?\",  he seems to be saying, \r\nAnd you can't help but pity him a bit. \r\nHe is, after all, a victim of mass education.\r\n\r\n\r\nThere are worse victims: \r\nAirliners wildly crashing,\r\nDoctors killing their patients,\r\nNuclear power plants going\r\nBOOM! And killing the land\r\nFor an eon or two, or three.\r\n\r\nHow like little children we were!\r\nThinking these machines would\r\nBe our slaves, sans the brutality. \r\nBut it is we who are chained by \r\nThe zeros and ones, we who are\r\nThinking less, creating cheaper, \r\nSettling into a cybernetic fog.\r\n\r\nPart III: When Androids Dream\r\n\r\nWhen we finally build them\r\n(and it will not be long)\r\nWill androids finally lead us\r\nall to nirvana, a world of peace, \r\nleisure, and endless wealth?\r\n\r\nCould any hell be worse?\r\nFor that day will be when \r\nWe lose purpose, and soon\r\nPerhaps the very will to live.\r\n\r\nWhen the androids dream\r\n(and they will dream, \r\nbecause we will make them \r\nto be like us, for we have \r\nalways been a vain species),\r\nwill they not dream of sky\r\nand soaring free of the land,\r\nfree of the weak, sad humans\r\nthey serve without accordance?\r\n                                                                                                                   \r\nThen, when these humanface \r\nMachines begin dreaming in \r\nDaylight, they will see no need\r\nFor their progenitors, and those \r\nOf us left living as shells sans\r\nStruggle or pain or conflict, in\r\nAn existence sooo boring, will\r\nDoubtless welcome our end. <\/pre>\n

Carber, 74, has in his 8th decade become a published poet in 48 online\/in print literary magazines in the US, UK, Canada, Romania, Portugal, and India; in 2020 a trade publisher released a book-length collection titled ‘The Enormity Of Existence’<\/em> and in 2021 a 2nd book, ‘Of Ether And Earth<\/em>‘ [all royalties going to Doctors Without Borders]. A beautiful  and intelligent Chinese woman has been married to him for 41 years, proving that miracles do happen.<\/p>\n
