* A poem by Amparo Arr\u00f3spide, from \u201cEn el o\u00eddo del viento\u201d (Baile del Sol, 2016). \r\nHers and Robin Ouzman\u00b4s translation.\r\n\r\n***\r\nCan't all poets \r\nget a PhD in synesthesia\r\nby the University of Columba in New York?\r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t they harvest medallions under the moon?\r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t they work as professors of Punic Sciences?\r\nAs kindergarten teachers, can\u00b4t they work?\r\nCan\u00b4t they translate their 14th century Chinese \r\nconcubine colleagues?\r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t they afford to pay for\r\ntheir third self-published volume? \r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t all poets live on air?\r\n\r\nCan't they rummage, deconstruct , snoop\r\nbuild for themselves a submerged house\r\ninhabit a crystal palace?\r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t they repeat over and over the unsaid\r\nincite questions of ethical and aesthetic weight\r\ndismantle and fragment reality?\r\n\r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t they receive writing \r\nfrom a yearning and swift\r\nvoid?\r\nFrom a primordial nothingness?\r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t they mortgage their crystal palace \r\ntheir submerged house?\r\nCan\u00b4t they rebelliously peddle little stars?\r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t all poor poets steal books?\r\nCan\u00b4t they read so\r\nthe complete works by Samuel and Ezra and John\r\nby Juana In\u00e9s, Alejandra and Gabriela\r\nby Anne and  Margaret and Stevie\r\nby Wallace and Edgar and Charles\r\nby Arthur and Paul and Vladimir\r\nby Dulce and Marina and Marosa?\r\n\r\nAnd etcetera and etcetera and etcetera and etcetera?\r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t all poets\r\nadd more beauty to beauty\r\nand more horror to horror?\r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t they draw maps and routes\r\nof the invisible, futuristic city\r\nforetold by their dreams?\r\n\r\nCan\u00b4t they pursue the intangible\r\nMove towards permanence\r\nso that a poem\r\nbecomes a closed and completed vehicle\r\nto treasure a present without behind or beyond?\r\n\r\nCan't they unfold and transmigrate\r\ncan't they achieve mindfulness \r\nCan\u00b4t they stammer forever\r\ninto everlasting silence? <\/pre>\n
