\nWheellock pistols and civil war sabers,
\nmore than just a family\u2019s coat-of-arms,
\ndecorate knotty pine cabin walls
\ndeep in the Everglades pestilent swamp
\nwhere alligators rest on banks covered
\nin muck, ready to strike out at inattentive
\nwildlife or rush back into the wetlands
\nhidden below the quagmire except for eyes
\nthat poke above water like periscopes viewing all.
\n 
\nThe cabin floor, unswept for a dozen years, sported
\nmulticolored moss & mildew corner to corner;
\nrat turds crunch as feet walk across wooden floors,
\nfigures appear outside through wax paper windows,
\nwinds whisper between cracks & increase tonality
\nas wings rustle and mud-swallows flitter in & out
\nrafter holes safe from predators, build nests, tend chicks\u2014
\ncultivate life amid pass\u00e9 remnants of fireplace heraldry
\nwhile crossed blades just rust & pirate pistols don\u2019t fire.
