{"id":7731,"date":"2021-05-16T21:46:11","date_gmt":"2021-05-16T21:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/?p=7731"},"modified":"2021-05-16T21:49:19","modified_gmt":"2021-05-16T21:49:19","slug":"hidden-pain-before-2-poems-by-laura-stamps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/hidden-pain-before-2-poems-by-laura-stamps\/","title":{"rendered":"Hidden Pain &#038; Before. 2 Poems by Laura Stamps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(i.)<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHidden Pain<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nShe sleeps in a tree, the tallest tree<br \/>\nshe can find in this dark forest.<br \/>\nHere she feels safe, this place<br \/>\nwhere she no longer has to smile<br \/>\nand pretend the last three years never happened,<br \/>\nyears of chronic trauma caused<br \/>\nby four men, narcissists, who abandoned her<br \/>\nas collateral damage.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHow did it feel?  Like terrorists<br \/>\nhad blown up her life.  No time<br \/>\nto grieve.  No time to heal.<br \/>\nToo much to do.  Too much to clean up.<br \/>\nYet none of those men apologized.<br \/>\nAnd one had the nerve to say,<br \/>\n<em>I\u2019m sorry about what I did to you,<br \/>\nbut you\u2019re strong.  I knew<br \/>\nyou\u2019d land on your feet.<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWas that the best he could do?<br \/>\nWell, at least now she knew<br \/>\nnarcissists are just terrorists in disguise.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<em>I couldn\u2019t tell anyone<\/em>, she whispered<br \/>\nto the tree. <em> There was no time.<br \/>\nI had to repair the damage.  Be strong.<br \/>\nBe strong.<br \/>\nBe strong.<br \/>\nNo one knew what had happened.<br \/>\nWhat it did to me.  What they did to me.<br \/>\nNo one knew.  I should have told someone.<br \/>\nAnyone.<br \/>\nBut I didn\u2019t. <\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nNow she spends her nights with a tree.<br \/>\nTwo kindred spirits.<br \/>\nIts branches lifted high.  Her arms raised.<br \/>\nBoth of them reaching for the sky,<br \/>\nreaching,<br \/>\nreaching,<br \/>\nas if they might drown.  But only<br \/>\none of them knows<br \/>\nshe\u2019s sinking.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n(ii)<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nBefore<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n1.<br \/>\nBefore her life blew sky-high<br \/>\nshe had goals, dreams, hope, and a future.<br \/>\nA bright one.  Her future.<br \/>\nBut that was before four men<br \/>\nentered her world with their drama, mistakes,<br \/>\ndestruction, and left her behind<br \/>\nto fix the damage.<br \/>\nIn the midst of this, her future vanished.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s not that the future looked bleak.<br \/>\nIt just wasn\u2019t there anymore.<br \/>\nShe couldn\u2019t see it.  No dreams,<br \/>\nno goals, no hope.  No future.<br \/>\nHer future.<br \/>\nGone.<br \/>\nAll that remained was a vast blank<br \/>\nspace that used to be called FUTURE.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n2.<br \/>\nEvery day she felt herself slipping, sinking,<br \/>\ndeeper into that void.  Its emptiness plagued her.<br \/>\nIts hopelessness.  It haunted her.<br \/>\nAnd it hurt.<br \/>\nMore than she ever imagined.<br \/>\nWhere is the woman who eagerly achieved<br \/>\nher goals, chased her dreams, hoped<br \/>\nin a sunny future?<br \/>\nShe vanished, too.  Gone.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n3.<br \/>\nGo back!<br \/>\nGo back to before.<br \/>\nBefore those men.  Before their damage.<br \/>\nGo back!  Look at the future before.<br \/>\nWhat nourished her hope?  Before, before.<br \/>\nGo back!<br \/>\nWhat were her goals?  What were her dreams?<br \/>\nPursue them again.  Go back!<br \/>\nWhat were the things that gave her joy before?<br \/>\nDo them again.  And again.<br \/>\nAnd again.<br \/>\nGo back!  Go back to before.  The future<br \/>\nwaits. Her poetry book<strong> THE YEAR OF THE CAT<\/strong> was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize (2005).  She is also the recipient of seven Pushcart Prize nominations.
