It’s been two days that no bird
\nhas been in the sky, the dooryard
\nso quiet except for the sound of an
\nacorn just fallen from the oak tree;
\nmy neighbor so empty-headed she
\ndoesn’t believe a word the scientists
\nsay; this day in 2020 she’d rather
\nput her faith in what that louse has
\nto say. She sees him as an ornament,
\nsomething full and bright, she doesn’t
\nsee under the surface like me and so
\nmany other people do. I fear the worst,
\nsmell the smoke rising of a growing
\ncivil war or revolution having wound
\ntheir way around my head and squeezed
\nthemselves inside. My oldest daughter
\ndoesn’t like it either; this morning she
\nwoke up with sleep marks creasing the
\nside of her face. And I hate what I just
\nlearned on the radio; I bang my head
\non a book trying to dislodge yesterday’s
\nmemory. I stand there outside my home
\nall by myself staring at the cold sunset
\nabove me with hardly a friend because
\nI like to speak my mind. No one wants
\nto listen to me except for my father,
\nthe smartest person I know. I’m no
\nNostradamus, but the predictions I’ve
\nmade over the years have always rung
\ntrue.
