{"id":7647,"date":"2021-04-08T18:38:05","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T18:38:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/?p=7647"},"modified":"2021-04-08T18:38:06","modified_gmt":"2021-04-08T18:38:06","slug":"dead-beat-dad-more-poems-by-brian-rihlmann","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/dead-beat-dad-more-poems-by-brian-rihlmann\/","title":{"rendered":"Dead Beat Dad &#038; More Poems by Brian Rihlmann"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\ni.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Deadbeat Dad<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nmy poems are my children<br \/>\nand I&#8217;m their deadbeat dad\u2014<br \/>\nI create them, love them,<br \/>\nnurture them for a little while<br \/>\na few hours&#8230;a day&#8230;<br \/>\nsometimes a week<br \/>\nif that&#8217;s what it takes<br \/>\nuntil I feel they&#8217;re ready<br \/>\nor I&#8217;m just tired of them<br \/>\nthen I boot them out<br \/>\nI open the door and say\u2014<br \/>\nyou&#8217;ve gotten all I have to give<br \/>\nso go on now<br \/>\nyou\u2019re free<br \/>\nget out there and live<br \/>\ngo see what they&#8217;ll make of you<br \/>\njust don&#8217;t expect too much<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nsometimes they don&#8217;t want to go<br \/>\nthey look back at me<br \/>\nfrom the front steps<br \/>\nthey plead with their eyes<br \/>\nand their sad little faces<br \/>\nbut I set mine to stone<br \/>\nand shut the door<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nlike any parent<br \/>\nof course it pains me to know<br \/>\nthey may be mocked<br \/>\nor laughed at<br \/>\nor misunderstood<br \/>\nthey may wind up<br \/>\nrotting in dumpsters<br \/>\nor abandoned in dark<br \/>\nand dusty corners<br \/>\nbut there&#8217;s always the possibility<br \/>\nof being found by someone<br \/>\nwho needs them<br \/>\nsomeone who hears<br \/>\nwhat they have to say<br \/>\nand that&#8217;s the best<br \/>\na deadbeat dad like me<br \/>\ncan hope for<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nii.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>One Day Much Too Soon<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nshe walks unsteadily as a toddler<br \/>\nand trembles as though terrified<br \/>\nalways a nurse by her side<br \/>\nI\u2019ve watched her come and go<br \/>\nfrom the house next door<br \/>\ndiminutive and middle-aged<br \/>\nwith pageboy hair and thick glasses<br \/>\nbut I haven\u2019t seen her<br \/>\nsince the ambulance came that day<br \/>\nand I haven\u2019t heard<br \/>\nthe unearthly sound she makes<br \/>\nhalfway between a laugh and a cry<br \/>\nI never knew which<br \/>\nmaybe she didn\u2019t either<br \/>\nbut now as I stand outside, listening&#8230;<br \/>\nthe absence and the silence<br \/>\nreminds me of all we get used to<br \/>\nand all the strangeness we\u2019ll miss<br \/>\none day much too soon<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\niii.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>One Hand On Her Ass<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nIf a young man<br \/>\never sought my advice<br \/>\nI&#8217;d tell him this\u2014<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t kick yourself too much<br \/>\nnot over the times<br \/>\nyou stumble and fall<br \/>\nnot over the time<br \/>\nyou think you&#8217;ve wasted<br \/>\nlying there<br \/>\nuntil you&#8217;re able to get<br \/>\non your feet again<br \/>\nand not over all the people<br \/>\nyou believe you&#8217;ve let down<br \/>\nbecause the world<br \/>\ncouldn&#8217;t possibly go on<br \/>\nwithout you, right?<br \/>\ndon&#8217;t kick yourself<br \/>\nfor any of it<br \/>\nin fact make a habit<br \/>\nof not kicking yourself\u2014<br \/>\nlife&#8217;s a cranky old mare<br \/>\nshe&#8217;ll kick you plenty<br \/>\nstomp you when you&#8217;re down<br \/>\nshe doesn&#8217;t need<br \/>\nany of your help<br \/>\noh\u2014and if you have to walk<br \/>\nbehind her<br \/>\nkeep one hand<br \/>\non her ass<br \/>\nand stay as close<br \/>\nas you possibly can<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/dead-beat-dad-more-poems-by-brian-rihlmann\/272756df-c143-455d-9d16-ef5c682d57e9\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7648\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/272756DF-C143-455D-9D16-EF5C682D57E9-300x225.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/272756DF-C143-455D-9D16-EF5C682D57E9-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/272756DF-C143-455D-9D16-EF5C682D57E9-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/272756DF-C143-455D-9D16-EF5C682D57E9-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/272756DF-C143-455D-9D16-EF5C682D57E9.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nBrian Rihlmann:<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nBrian Rihlmann lives and writes in Reno, Nevada.
