\nSHAKESPEARE\u2019S GARDEN
\n 
\nI sat on a bench, raw logs,
\nshaved clean almost
\nin Shakespeare\u2019s Garden.
\nThe magnolias were bursting,
\nand the cherries,
\nand Japanese plum.
\nA photographer
\nheld his lens high to
\nthe pink, white, and purple buds,
\nsnapping, looking,
\nsnapping. Across the
\nsky, the apartment towers
\nlooked grand,
\nlike church steeples,
\ngraceful, gothic spires.
\nAnd I thought of you,
\npainting this scene,
\nlike we used to do.
\n 
\nCOWBOY HAT
\n 
\nI wore a cowboy hat\u2014
\nstraw\u2014and raw confidence,
\nas I walked past two men
\nwho turned to look and said,
\nWe\u2019ll never see that girl again.
\n 
\nHEADS
\n 
\nThey turn in summer for
\nsun-kissed hair, buttery
\nflesh\u2014exposed, carefree.
\nThey look down, turn away,
\nafter fall brings its dull cast,
\nand I wonder what is true?
\n 
\nTHE WRITING LIFE

\nI write a few lines
\nand feel the calm
\nof a practiced monk.
\nBut too long away
\nI am the worst sort of
\nneurotic\u2014incessant.

\nKarol Nielsen is the author of the memoirs Black Elephants <\/em>(Bison Books, 2011) and Walking A&P <\/em>(Mascot Books, 2018) and the chapbooks This Woman I Thought I\u2019d Be <\/em>(Finishing Line Press, 2012) and Vietnam Made Me Who I Am<\/em> (Finishing Line Press, 2020). Her first memoir was shortlisted for the William Saroyan International Prize for Writing in nonfiction in 2012. Excerpts were honored as notable essays in The Best American Essays in 2010 and 2005. Her full poetry collection was a finalist for the Colorado Prize for Poetry in 2007. Her work has appeared in Epiphany, Guernica, Lumina, North Dakota Quarterly, Permafrost, RiverSedge,<\/em> and elsewhere. She has taught writing at New York University and New York Writers Workshop.
