\nUptown
\n 
\nThe newspaper makes me angry and I prepare myself
\nfor a day of punching Nazis. I read about the local museum
\nbeing infiltrated by white supremacists and so I plan my day
\naround a visit uptown. My daughter asks me where we\u2019re going and I tell her
\nwe\u2019re going to fuck some shit up.
\n 
\nI keep my eyes peeled for guys with shaved heads and swastika pins
\ncombat boots and iron crosses but I don\u2019t see any. Someone says
\nsomething kind of racist on the bus next to me and I look at them
\nbut then they shut up as if they know what\u2019s in my head.
\n

\nAfter the Funeral
\n 
\nit\u2019s become a contest of who knew first
\nwho first found out how and when he or she died
\nwho was closest, who has the best story. we get ugly
\nin our nostalgia, tread a difficult balance between
\npreserving the subject\u2019s sudden sainthood
\nwhile expunging our most pointed, painful, awful memories
\nfind some way to say we should have seen it coming
\nexpress surprise that it took so long.
\n 
\nafterwards, we each retreat to our private musings
\non how if things had been different
\nit could have been any one of us
\nit should have been someone else. there\u2019s a dark, uncertain target
\nover everyone we know now, ready to move on
\nwho will be next.
\n
