‘Learning Curve\u2019 is an unpublished collection concerned with the decline of Western civilization<\/em>: Gary Beck<\/p>\n

\r\n\r\n(i.)\r\n\r\nUrban Reaches\r\n\r\nAlone in a great city\r\nstrangers pass,\r\nintent on jobs, crime,\r\nshopping, terror.\r\nI know not what.\r\nThey all look remote,\r\ndon\u2019t say \u2018good morning\u2019,\r\ndon\u2019t meet my gaze,\r\nexcept the hostiles,\r\nwhen I quickly look away.\r\nI cannot tell\r\nwho is good, kind, normal,\r\nsmart enough to build a future.\r\nTemporarily marooned\r\nin a vast enclosure\r\nI do not know what to do\r\nto establish an identity.\r\n\r\n(ii.)\r\n\r\nHomeless VIII\r\n\r\nThey robbed my cans\r\nfor the second time\r\nin a week.\r\nI hustled my ass off\r\ngetting those cans\r\nand got nothing for it.\r\nAt least they didn\u2019t beat me.\r\nMaybe I\u2019ll get me a knife\r\nand cut them good\r\nif they try to rob me again.\r\n\r\n(iii.)\r\n\r\nConflict\r\n\r\nArmies march in many lands.\r\nRebels attack in many lands.\r\nConflicts simmer across the globe,\r\n\tboil over,\r\n\t  erupt\r\nin deadly violence,\r\ndestroying lives,\r\n     property,\r\n     eradicating\r\naspirations for stability,\r\n      disallowing\r\n      normal pursuits,\r\n\teducation,\r\n      home building,\r\n      raising children,\r\n\thoping\r\ntomorrow will be better\r\nthan the savagery today.\r\n<\/pre>\n

Gary Beck has spent most of his adult life as a theater director and worked as an art dealer when he couldn’t earn a living in the theater. He has also been a tennis pro, a ditch digger and a salvage diver. His original plays and translations of Moliere, Aristophanes and Sophocles have been produced Off Broadway. His poetry, fiction and essays have appeared in hundreds of literary magazines and his published books include 26 poetry collections, 10 novels, 3 short story collections, 1 collection of essays and 1 collection of one-act plays. Published poetry books include:  Dawn in Cities, Assault on Nature, Songs of a Clerk, Civilized Ways, Displays, Perceptions, Fault Lines, Tremors, Perturbations, Rude Awakenings, The Remission of Order, Contusions and Desperate Seeker<\/em> (Winter Goose Publishing.
