\nOnly to meet Yuyu
\n(A\u00a0Poem in pandemic for my mentor, Mr. Yuyutsu Sharma)

\nThere\u2019s no one to talk to
\nin the\u00a0buzzing streets of Kathmandu,
\neverything\u00a0has frozen in this town;
\nno calm even in the mannequin eyes standing
\nerect in the fancy boutiques along
\nthe termite eaten streets of the city.
\n 
\nSwirling dust and choking fumes infuse
\nwith the breath of pallid roadside trees.
\nThe landscape changes as the rain falls
\nand the leaves smile\u00a0again.
\nIsolated raindrops,\u00a0expelled lovers
\n\u00a0before their first kiss lie
\nalong the twigs of the branches
\n\u00a0\u2014 round, sparkling globules
\n \u2014\u00a0undulating without descent.
\n 
\nAnd then everything changes again
\nwhen the\u00a0leaves falls, everything changes.
\nOnce they touch the ground
\nthey turn into ciphers
\nthe sublime truths of life
\nbeneath their layers.
\n\u00a0 
\nThe barriers people create between nature
\nand windows, walls, doors,
\nare not really barriers \u00a0in Kathmandu
\nfor you can talk with all. \u00a0And you can
\nnever be bored, you just have to sit
\nand look at the people passing by
\nand there’s so much \u00a0to\u00a0say.
\n 
\nGazing deep into Buddha\u2019s serpent eyes,
\none feels like being in a Time Machine.\u00a0
\nBut sometimes, there is silence,
\nutter silence of\u00a0a sadhu\u2019s stare
\ninto the infinity in Kathmandu,
\nsilence of old mansions
\nwhere only\u00a0 a caretaker\u00a0kills time.
\nAnd the\u00a0civilians of the nation disappear
\nlike the water\u00a0\u00a0sprouts \u00a0of the\u00a0valley
\nchoking\u00a0my soul\u00a0 to the core .
\n\u00a0 
\nThere is not a person that I can talk to
\nin the rustic streets\u00a0 of Kathmandu.
\nI am as forlorn and lonely as a man snoozing
\non an unused railway tracks
\nin some old Indian town.
\n\u00a0 
\nI hardly ever go out now.
\nI am fed up with the squalor of urban life
\nwhere everyone is not what they seem to be.
\nI should have stayed back
\nat the banks of the river Sunkoshi
\nthat festoons my village
\nchewing the pebbles
\nof my pristine dreams.
\n\u00a0 
\nThese days, I leave my home
\nonly to meet Yuyu, chat up nonstop over
\nendless\u00a0cups of masala tea
\nat Shreejana\u2019s \u00a0While Lotus Book Shop,
\nwatching the poems\u00a0turn into
\ncolorful serpents and climb the\u00a0\u00a0murky trees\u00a0
\nenveloped in grey mist.
\n\u00a0 
\nI leave my home only to meet Yuyu
\nand share a joke or two,
\nlisten to his sharp\u00a0one liners.
\nanecdotes of his travels from
\nthe shores of his dreams
\nand laugh aloud\u00a0
\ncelebrating full- blooded flame
\nlighted in honor of his vagabond Muse.
\n 
\nHis words little by little entrap you,
\n\u00a0enwrap your soul in\u00a0their singing silence,
\nat the end of the day feeding my shriveled soul.
\n 
\nAnd often as\u00a0we wave goodbye,
\nhe delves deep into a silent\u00a0
\nthat soon turns into a river of endless vigor.
\n\u00a0 
\nPoem dangles from
\nthe edge of his serene mouth.\u00a0
\nAnd a dreamy prose
\ndances over his misty eyelashes.
\n 
\nAnd the silence
\nan ode to the Kathmandu Valley.
\nIf\u00a0one dare to pay heed.
\n
