Dear _____, I lust her\u2014though
\nshe cannot know. It\u2019s a painful thing\u2014
\na tightness of the chest. I keep having to stop
\nmyself from ending each email
\nwith \u201clove, R\u201d. But appearances
\nbeing what they are\u2014I end with \u201cbest\u201d,
\nbut I know what I mean\u2014so there\u2019s that.
\n

\nFountain Statue
\n <\/p>\n

When it was still years ago\u2014
\nbefore I saw that girl
\n 
\nwith a flower in her ear; before
\nthat flower grew\u2014
\nI missed a summer day.
\nMy broken English stands better
\n 
\nthan my unwhistling lips and tonight
\nI meet a German poet
\nI\u2019ve never heard. He\u2019s a park
\n 
\nstatue I can touch and feel the shoulder curve of his
\nbronze rather than the fountain statues whose jagged edges\u2014
\nor if they\u2019re soft it\u2019s only the mollification
\nof time and distance\u2014I can only feel
\nwith my eyes. The ones I walk in circles around
\n 
\nwishing to walk on water. I took a photo of the tin-can moon
\nelectrified by lightning
\nto understand the part of me that\u2019ll go to this meeting
\nin the name of\u2014it rained in Munich today.
\n

\nThe Color of a Snuffed Flame
\n <\/p>\n

Woken by a trumpet sounding.
\nThere are things
\nwe\u2019re meant to make, some
\nless definite than knots and a box. I watched
\n 
\na Boeing 747\u2014there was a girl
\nwho taught me to do that\u2014and thought
\nof the 369 lives in it and those
\nstories. This is too much; people have their minutes
\nwhich added together equal a life
\nand all the plots and coincidences that live therein.
\n 
\nThe butterfly house in Vienna
\nwas beautiful though hot, small
\nand expensive. Filled with kids
\nmore interested in the fish,
\nparents who wished their kids
\nwould look at the butterflies,
\nand one woman taking pictures
\nof a dead butterfly. Tomorrow I\u2019m
\n 
\ngoing to a fair to win a stuffed animal.
\n 
\n
