\nChores
\n 
\nThe humdrum of humble chores
\nhunted by us both
\nbecause the syllables,
\nstressed and unstressed, of gardening,
\ndusting, washing, doing the dishes
\nor fluffing those instruments of sleep
\nlullabies our nervous system.
\n 
\n“Which song did your great grandparents
\nsing during the old pestilence?”
\nYou shake your head. The scattered music
\nmigrated to the concentration camp of Lethe.
\n 
\nDuring shoveling snow that swirls
\nto sheath
\nthe ground beneath for the first time since
\nthe glacial maximum I discover
\nmy grandmother’s canticle – half ember,
\nhalf skeletal, some canary’s bones
\nasleep in its circle.
\n 
\nCrickets
\n 
\nCrickets mark the absence of silence
\nor noise, and the wailing sirens.
\nWe count them pass
\nas if they carry silence
\nin body bags.
\n 
\n“One.”, I say in a singsong way;
\n“And two.” You croon. The lullaby
\nor the urgency of sirens
\nburkes the insects; something
\ngnaws the roof, makes one itch
\nto touch the ceiling
\nwith his tongue and to lick
\nit clean.
\n 
\nIf you think we’ve lost our minds
\nwelcome to the house of quarantine;
\nthe border of the lands all indoor,
\nwe play with our chores to stay sane.
\nOne flipped and crossed the border.
\nWe are yet to hear the rests.
\nSomething gnaws the roof. I hope it has life.
\n
