\nHard Times
\n 
\nOn many street corners
\nof my fair city
\nthe homeless sit
\nresources exhausted,
\nthe tattered cardboard signs
\nrequesting aid
\nthe last connection
\nbetween abandonment
\nand termination,
\nalternate options
\ntotally expended.
\n 
\n(ii)
\n 
\nSustained
\n 
\nI do not need
\nintimations of mortality,
\nmy frailty so burdensome
\nI never forget
\neach day a miracle
\nof continuation,
\nfor which I give thanks
\nthat I can still function
\nand appreciate beauty,
\nweeping willow, Beethoven,
\nthe wondrous creations
\nof man and nature
\n 
\n(iii)

\nFirst Contact
\n 
\nSeveral times daily
\nI look up at the sky
\nexpecting an alien spaceship
\nto suddenly appear.
\nLogically it shouldn\u2019t be
\ninvaders or traders,
\nbut eager explorers
\nurgent for discovery.
\nIf we are fortunate,
\ntheir advanced technology
\nwill stimulate our sciences
\nfor rapid innovation,
\nso when the merchants and soldiers
\narrive for the next visit
\nwe are not as ill prepared
\nas primitive tribesmen
\nwho were devoured
\nby Western appetites.

\nMachine Learning IV
\n 
\nThe latest business venture,
\nthe Discreet Android Delivery Service,
\nsatisfaction guaranteed,
\nall major credit cards accepted,
\nall languages spoken,
\nwill open a new window
\nto A.I. profit.
\nPreliminary surveys
\nindicate a big market,
\nas long as the company controls
\nproprietorial software.
\nThey\u2019ve vowed great rewards
\nor dire punishment
\nto employees
\nto maintain secrecy.
\nProspects are glittering
\nand to encourage clientele
\ncorporate accounts welcome.
\nstill enriching my life.
\n

\nGary Beck has spent most of his adult life as a theater director and worked as an art dealer when he couldn’t earn a living in the theater. He has also been a tennis pro, a ditch digger and a salvage diver. His original plays and translations of Moliere, Aristophanes<\/em> and Sophocles<\/em> have been produced Off Broadway. His poetry, fiction and essays have appeared in hundreds of literary magazines and his published books include 26 poetry collections, 10 novels, 3 short story collections, 1 collection of essays and 1 collection of his one-act plays.
