\nLet the Whales Escape R.W.Haynes<\/a><\/strong>

\n 
\nMona Lisa and the Marlboro Man<\/strong>
\n 
\nNot knowing if wisdom would impulsively fly
\nOr if it dragged its feet when impulse flared,
\nShe had to make the call and suddenly try
\nTo do what an immortal would have dared,
\nAn Aphrodite, ascending in a flying cart
\nDrawn by fifty gurgling pigeons at a speed
\nWhich matched the speed of her own matchless heart
\nAnd the heartbreaking glory of her need.
\nLater, back in Laredo, she would say
\nShe didn\u2019t know why she\u2019d taken off that way,
\nSmiling with satisfaction, recalling when
\nHer best moments flew by delightfully then.
\n 
\nHe didn\u2019t want anyone saying, \u201cOh.
\nThis is how I feel,\u201d but people do
\nSay that, and he said it, sometimes, too,
\nIn unguarded moments, and he would show
\nHow he felt, displaying great disdain
\nAs he lit his pipe, blew blue smoke forth
\nDelivering himself from aesthetic pain
\nIncurred by foolish ideas from the North,
\nAnd, nodding slightly to appreciate
\nA tolerable turn of phrase which he
\nThought suggested some brain activity,
\nHe let his tobacco counter-obfuscate
\nSuspicious overflows of raw emotion
\nWhich threatened to undermine devotion.
\n 
\n 
\nOn the Balcony of the Palacio de Cort\u00e9s<\/strong>
\n 
\nMadness stands at one elbow. At the other
\nVarious figures in masks take their turns,
\nAnd all whisper steadily, one after another,
\nSyllables whose content one never learns.
\nThe maniac is familiar; one keeps a careful eye
\nOn him night and day, and day and night,
\nBut who are the others who are standing by,
\nAnd what are these advisements they recite?
\nI dream the lonely ghost of love is one
\nWhose only consolation is to speak of sin,
\nAnd when that sad companion is done,
\nI hear Complacency, Madness\u2019s mad twin.
\nI listen in patience, fighting back the fear
\nI\u2019ll never hear the voice I hope to hear.
\n 
\n 
\nIbsen on the Nile<\/strong>
\n 
\nThose monuments are monuments merely
\nOf themselves; this river of nutrition
\nAnd death, inundating Egypt, is clearly
\nA muddy embodiment of time\u2019s volition.
\nI saw the Sphinx off in the distance. Today
\nI purchased an ancient mummified hand
\nTo give to my wife, safely far away,
\nAnd I suspect that she will understand.
\nI met DeLesseps recently. He and I
\nHave much in common, more than he knows;
\nMy work is lonelier, but there exists a tie
\nBetween what we do as humankind grows.
\nThese monuments record the vanity of ages;
\nMine put the outraged human soul on stages.
\n
