‘Disruptions\u2019 is an unpublished collection that examines the various interruptions to the daily struggle in this difficult life. Author’s Comment.

\n  
\nSuspension
\n  
\nThe days get cooler,
\nthe nights colder,
\nmore and more grey days.
\nSome say climate change.
\nOthers say nay.
\nIt is difficult to tell
\nwhat is or is not normal,
\nallowing many to ignore
\nthe need to reduce
\npolluting fossil fuels.
\n  
\n(ii)
\n  
\nRelocation
\n 
\nMany governments
\nbuild housing for the poor
\noften a benefit and curse
\nat the same time,
\nsince social services
\nrarely accompany relocation
\nleaving residents adrift
\nwith insufficient resources
\nto cope with new conditions.
\n 
\nThe Chinese government
\nhas built entire cities
\nfor several millions
\nuprooting them
\nfor a new way of life
\ncompletely unprepared
\nfor a foreign environment
\nconfining them to hi-rises.
\n 
\n(iii)
\n 
\nFreedom State
\n 
\nWhether alone
\nin public space,
\nisolated in a crowd,
\nor solitary confinement,
\nwe are only prisoners
\nwhen we stop thinking
\nabout the issues
\nof our times.
\n

\nPrimordial Response
\n 
\nFear of the machine,
\naccentuated
\nby the growing loss
\nof fear of Nature,
\nexcept when propelled into panic
\nby flood, fire, hurricane,
\nsince for urbanites
\nthe natural world
\ngenerally seems benevolent.
\nOur primitive selves
\nrequire something to dread
\nso we select the machines
\nthat abused so many,
\nreplaced so many,
\nforgetting that men
\nmake the machines,
\noperate the machines.

\nwith our elections,
\nso of course it must be true.
\nThe new E.P.A. head
\nis firing the scientists
\nwho believe in climate change.
\nMore and more men are guilty
\nof harassing women.
\nRoad rage incidents
\nend in shootings.
\nA puppy in a pet shop
\nis stolen by a couple.
\nAnd endless amounts of sports,
\nall kinds for all tastes.
\nThese tidbits just a hint
\nof what goes on daily
\nthat we never hear of,
\nsuggesting to some of us
\nwe have no idea
\nwhat really goes on
\nin this complicated world.
