A Poem by Reuben Ellis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\nDuring the fat years of Cripple Creek, the<br \/>\nveins of turquoise lay at angles to the seams<br \/>\nof sylvanite and gold, and they say that<br \/>\nwhen the ore was crushed and cyanidated,<br \/>\nturquoise and the other worthless rocks<br \/>\nwere ground into tailings in the stamp<br \/>\nmills, later used as gravel to pave the muddy<br \/>\nstreets.  Today, small and jagged pieces of<br \/>\nblue after hard rains still surface in the<br \/>\nalleys, washed and alloyed, stonefruit.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThat wet morning behind the Elks, by the<br \/>\npallets and the bone weeds, I found it<br \/>\nand rolled it between my thumb and finger<br \/>\nas I would hold a nipple, a small ball, a<br \/>\ncaterpillar, and I placed it in my mouth, to<br \/>\ntaste it for breath, for solidity, to conjure<br \/>\nthe undisturbed earth, and it worked&#8211;my<br \/>\nsenses stream like neutrinos through the<br \/>\ncore, the clear puddle where I stood, a<br \/>\nphilter, a caldera.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/breathing-turquoise-a-poem-by-reuben-ellis\/4-14-18-ellis\/#main\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6460\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/4.14.18-Ellis-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/4.14.18-Ellis-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/4.14.18-Ellis-768x1136.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/4.14.18-Ellis-692x1024.jpg 692w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/4.14.18-Ellis.jpg 1038w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nReuben Ellis is professor and chair of the Writing Department at Woodbury University in Los Angeles.  His publications include<em> Vertical Margins:  Mountaineering and the Landscapes of Neo-Imperialism; Stories and Stone:  Writing the Ancestral Pueblo Homeland<\/em>; and <em>Beyond Borders: The Selected Essays of Mary Austin<\/em>, as well as many published essays, short stories, and poems.
