\nFrom under mud
\nI have heard the colors speak to me,
\nlearned them differently
\nby setting one beside another.
\nIt’s always the same —–<\/strong>
\nthis desperate beginning
\non a turpentine foundation.
\nI would like to let things be,
\nleave the appropriate images
\nwhere they first were —–<\/strong>
\nIn news clips, in nightmares,
\nthe ruined opening a soldier
\nwalks through holding
\nsome child’s hand…..
\nSome childhoods are such camouflage
\nthe mortar, the fire-pocked bricks,
\n& escape through canvas,
\ncanvas & nothing else …..<\/strong>
\nSo that is what these mud colors tell,
\n& me, what do I know
\nrising out to scrape myself off
\nwith a palette knife?
\nI only know that turpentine burns
\n& that the painting by daylight
\nmay peel like a dream.
\n
