\nGutter Artists<\/strong>
\n 
\n 
\nCatch us
\nstreaming beside the street,
\njust below, out
\nof sight, see our message
\nin flashing lights
\nof liquid ink color splash
\non the spare spaces
\n(even some taken spaces),
\nsquint,
\nsee if you can make out
\nwhat we have to say.
\n 
\n 
\nThe Empress<\/strong>
\n 
\n 
\nregal
\nare the stars
\nin the lesson we learn
\nslide by slide
\nabout ancient
\nhistory.
\n 
\n 
\nThe Root of Who I Am<\/strong>
\n <\/p>\n

is in hillsides, valleys,
\nand rocky mountainsides,
\nis in surviving illnesses
\nand five feet of snow.
\n <\/p>\n

My life used to be rough,
\nbut maybe I’ve grown tender.
\nStill my roots reach
\nway down to the stirring
\nfoundations of the earth.
\n 
\nYou can see them
\nas the river runs by, eroding
\nthe land around, but the roots
\nreach up like gnarled knuckles,
\nstationary and purposeful.
\n 
\n 
\nBecause We Were Stars<\/strong>
\n <\/p>\n

we could barely see
\nthe earth.
\nHow could we know
\nwhat was teeming beneath
\nus?
\n <\/p>\n

By our own brightness,
\nwe missed some sights.
\nIf you look to your left…
\nIf you look to your right…
\n <\/p>\n

We learned to gaze
\naround and not simply
\nahead or at the distraction
\nof what seemed bright
\n <\/p>\n
