\n 
\nMy daughter, eight, looked at me
\nwith eyes: half-enquiring, half-afraid,
\neyes with faith, half, at least,
\nand asked suddenly: Are we born again after death?
\nI looked at my wife. Our eyes met.
\nShe smiled: that corners of the eyes,
\nso-it-did-happen smile, and I knew
\nit was not she who dropped
\na hint to the child
\nof death or birth, or both.
\nI did not, I know. We don\u2019t discuss death
\nat home, especially with children
\nawake or around: never with them around.
\nNo, not death, the old enemy, no talks
\nin the recent past with anyone.
\nDeath horrifies me.
\n 
\nSo, I sat back,
\ntook a pause,
\nfilled my eyes with light and strength,
\nthat fills the eyes of those
\nwith half-faith, at least,
\nand told her boldly that half-lie:
\n\u2018No, you don\u2019t have to die if you say no to death\u2019.
\nI knew I was half-true.
