\nthe math student
\nignored by all
\nwho may build the future,
\nwhile former sport’s heroes
\ndwell in the past,
\nunable to forget
\nearlier glory.

\nCollege students root
\nfor the home team,
\neager to belong
\nto a bigger world,
\npaint their faces
\nin school colors,
\nidentifying with
\nan institution
\nencouraging sports
\nmore than science,
\nrelegating the brightest
\nto unrequited dreams
\nof supple cheerleaders.
\n
\nMany football fans
\neither yearn for the past,
\nor never grew up.
\nSome fear the future,
\napprehensive of
\nthe loss of function,
\ntry to belong,
\nrooting for their team.
\nOthers don’t realize
\npros are as distant
\nas movie stars,
\nexcept they hurt each other
\nfor large salaries,
\nwhile loyal fans
\nwear stupid hats,
\nwave witless signs,
\nscream for victory
\nfor favorite teams.

\nDreams shatter,
\nmore fragile
\nthan steel, brick, glass
\nman-made materials,
\nconfining spaces
\nfor the mental container
\nof hopes, fears, guilt,
\nunlike other animals
\nwhose sleep exertions
