sculpted by Edgar Degas.\u00a0The Degas Poems\u00a0contains 29 poems.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3228\">Now loved, Degas&#8217; original wax version of the little dancer was hated,though his paintings had been greeted enthusiastically.\u00a0 His sculpture of\u00a0The Little Dancer, Aged 14, was considered shocking and unsettling, like a little monkey.\u00a0 It is said one father cried, &#8216;God forbid my daughter should become a dancer.&#8217;\u00a0 Many were shocked by her pose and the material used: human hair, beeswax, silk.\u00a0 Degas loved the opera and ballet but this statue was called &#8216;repulsive&#8217; and &#8216;vicious,&#8217; a threat to society.\u00a0 It forced viewers to look at the seamy side of life\u00a0since most of the young girls came from very poor slums and working class families.\u00a0 Others were horrified that she seemed to champion ugliness and depravity.\u00a0 Degas never again exhibited the sculpture.\u00a0 And, though he painted ballerinas all his life,\u00a0The Little Dancer\u00a0was largely forgotten until it was rediscovered with dozens of other sculptures.\u00a0 His fascination with making sculpture was little know in his lifetime, unlike his portraits, history paintings, scenes from modern life, the world of horse racig, and the theater and ballet.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3231\"><strong id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3230\">Christina Zawadiwsky, <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3234\">&#8220;We now recognize\u00a0The Little Dancer\u00a0sculpture by Degas as arresting and compelling, but there was a time when she was considered scandalous and disturbing.\u00a0 Lyn Lifshin&#8217;s poems celebrate her creation as a symbol of so many young and impoverished French female dancers who attempted to fill our world with grace, energy, and beauty.\u00a0 And Lifshin&#8217;s insightful and incisive\u00a0Little Dancer\u00a0poems remind us to remember her name, Marie Van Goethem, so that she will never fade into obscurity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3216\">\u2014Christina Zawadiwsky, author of The Hand On The Head Of Lazarus and recipient of the National Endowment Award.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3201\">\n<td id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3209\" colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\" width=\"50%\">\n<h2 id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3208\">Poems from Little Dancer\u2014The Degas Poems<\/h2>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3337\"><strong>THE LITTLE DANCER,<\/strong><br clear=\"none\" \/><br clear=\"none\" \/>was Degas in love with her?<br clear=\"none\" \/>Obsessed? Driven? Her<br clear=\"none\" \/>hair bound in probably<br clear=\"none\" \/>stolen ribbons. Not one image<br clear=\"none\" \/>but four. Her hands behind<br clear=\"none\" \/>her as if cuffed, a prisoner<br clear=\"none\" \/>of her poverty, exchanging<br clear=\"none\" \/>her body on stage or in<br clear=\"none\" \/>some rich patron&#8217;s bed,<br clear=\"none\" \/>offering a fantasy of ideal<br clear=\"none\" \/>femininity under the<br clear=\"none\" \/>sheets or on pointe on<br clear=\"none\" \/>the stage. And did Degas,<br clear=\"none\" \/>so fascinated by her, want<br clear=\"none\" \/>to know in every way,<br clear=\"none\" \/>what was inside her?<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3347\"><strong>FLOWER OF THE GUTTER <\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3253\">a winged urchin,<br clear=\"none\" \/>gamin aile, the little dancer must<br clear=\"none\" \/>have hypnotized Degas.<br clear=\"none\" \/>Unlike most ballerinas who<br clear=\"none\" \/>never talked, Marie was<br clear=\"none\" \/>feisty, not afraid to<br clear=\"none\" \/>speak her mind. She and<br clear=\"none\" \/>Degas must have bickered.<br clear=\"none\" \/>Could she have imagined all<br clear=\"none\" \/>the statues of her that<br clear=\"none\" \/>would be replicated, after<br clear=\"none\" \/>Degas&#8217; death, at the family&#8217;s<br clear=\"none\" \/>request, in bronze. She<br clear=\"none\" \/>couldn&#8217;t know there&#8217;d be<br clear=\"none\" \/>only one of her in wax, the<br clear=\"none\" \/>only one he&#8217;d actually<br clear=\"none\" \/>put his hands on, dressed<br clear=\"none\" \/>in a silk tutu with real<br clear=\"none\" \/>human hair and linen slippers,<br clear=\"none\" \/>maybe her own slippers.<br clear=\"none\" \/>her own DNA<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3200\" colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\" align=\"left\" valign=\"top\">\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3203\"><strong id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3334\">JOLIE-LAIDE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3206\"><em id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3205\">Not pretty or ugly but a <br clear=\"none\" \/>look that not only combines <br clear=\"none\" \/>attributes of both but suggests<br clear=\"none\" \/>a deeper sense of conflict between <br clear=\"none\" \/>appearance and inner life. <\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_ym19_1_1492254159355_3318\">The little dancer,<br clear=\"none\" \/>Degas&#8217; little rat<br clear=\"none\" \/>from the slums of Paris.<br clear=\"none\" \/>Fascinated by the street<br clear=\"none\" \/>urchin, Degas wrote a sonnet<br clear=\"none\" \/>about such a girl, that she<br clear=\"none\" \/>might have a good life<br clear=\"none\" \/>without losing the &#8220;race of<br clear=\"none\" \/>the street.&#8221; Unlike white<br clear=\"none\" \/>marble, something to<br clear=\"none\" \/>admire, brown wax invited<br clear=\"none\" \/>something to be studied,<br clear=\"none\" \/>dissected and penetrated, in<br clear=\"none\" \/>all its implications.
