Sonnet.Trina Gayon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>The early light reflects the short gray hairs<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>among the brown, and still he\u2019s just a boy<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>of twenty-five, who rises slowly, turns<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>to stare down at the bed where she coils<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>asleep, the dreamless sleep that only comes<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>on nights when he has filled her up with rain.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>He brought it with him out of Dublin slums,<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>to blanket California hills in gray <\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>soft shrouds. He waits for gold to turn to green.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>He lingers over tea and toast until<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>he\u2019s read the Times. Packing his bag to leave;<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>he has no ties to things that keep her still<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>beneath their weight \u2015 a job, this house, her car.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>It\u2019s almost Christmas, and Ireland\u2019s not so far.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0***<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" style=\"margin-bottom: 0cm;\"><span style=\"font-family: Georgia,serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Trina Gaynon is a graduate of the M.F.A. writing program at the University of San Francisco. She currently volunteers in Los Angeles with WriteGirl, providing workshops and mentors for young women in high school who are interested in writing, and works with a literacy program in her community. Recently, her poems have appeared in Natural Bridge, Runes, 26, Southeast Review and the anthology Bombshells: War Stories and Poems by Women on the Homefront and Yemassee.
