\nMy world is overly large,
\nwhile among the southern vines
\nlies a universe within an ear.
\nRiver stamen with carpel rafts
\non white waterfall tongues
\ndrifting toward the sea
\nof the pollinareum.
\n 
\nThe year punctuates beauty
\nas a single wave, carrying no
\nhuman meaning. Even its name,
\nPolyradicion, belongs to another time.
\nI lift a leaf to see into its secret
\nand disappear into the
\nstillness of its jungle.
\n 
\nA giant Sphinx moth orbits
\nthis solar system, praying
\nto its nightly gods. Its rings,
\nlike Saturn\u2019s, are fixed
\nagainst a blackgreen eternity.
\nIts ovaries, seed-thick with time,
\nfall soundless into the void.
\n 
\nOut of which flourishes
\na walking petal, a child suspended
\non a swing, a center that cannot
\nbe known. The flower may
\nlong for speech, a visual radicalism,
\nits slender arms reach around
\nthe world it does not greet.
\n 
\nIts longing separates us
\nforever, for we are different creatures
\nof a single species. It\u2019s loneliness
\nis never held up against a day
\nwhere night does not cover it.
\nIts longing is annual, endless
\nbut brief.
\n 
\n

\nI’ve published poems in the Atlantic, Poetry, Colorado Review,<\/em> and recently, or forthcoming, in Stand, Arc, and Antigonish Review.<\/em> My most recent collections are Saint Agnes Outside the Walls<\/em> (FutureCycle 2016), Children’s Drawings of the Universe<\/em> (Salmon Poetry 2015), and The Hermits of Dingle<\/em> (FutureCycle 2013). After many years of teaching with the University of Colorado, Boulder, I am presently living on the south shore of Nova Scotia in a small lobster fishing village.<\/strong>
