\n 
\nIt was gossip taught me to love him first.
\nMy ladies, how they whispered and they laughed:
\nbehind pale, slender fingers, their tongues would tattle\u00a0
\nto press that unlooked for suit inflaming it to burn
\nforge-bright against my dull and listless days.
\nBy smoking lamps I would study or stitch
\nuntil, at last, most sweetly cast adrift,
\nI would laze on my back as the ocean lulled
\nand I wondered at the wheeling stars.\u00a0
\nLacking oars and a sextant, I surrendered my ark
\nto the currents and the pull of the tide
\nonly to wake in the morning, landed high and dry,
\nwith the tracks of salt tears on my cheeks,
\na rosary upon my lips and an absence\u00a0
\nlike a pain between my thighs.<\/strong>
