\nThe mockingbirds in the bougainvillea
\nraised their brood among the thorns
\nwhere they wriggled and slipped,
\none after the other, as chicks do
\nto find a cooler place,
\ndown through the tangles and the shade,
\nand caught on a vine before reaching
\nthe ground. Each rescue
\nled to another, while the temperatures
\nstayed late summer high
\nlong into the evening
\nand next day was the same, with another degree
\nadded to the record, and birds
\non every continent
\nfeeling the change without knowing
\nwhy skylarks are fewer
\neach year and deforestation
\nleaves lyrebirds to sing
\nthe chainsaw\u2019s song. It happens
\nwhile the stock exchanges measure
\nloss as currency; it happens
\nday and night, while surveyors
\nlook through a theodolite to see
\nthe new division they prepare for; and while
\na rehabilitator raises the young
\nof mockingbirds who sing and chase flies
\ninto the dusk.<\/strong>

\nDavid Chorlton came to Phoenix from Europe in 1978 with his wife Roberta, an Arizona native. He quickly became comfortable with the climate while adjusting to the New World took longer. Writing and reading poetry have helped in that respect, as has exposure to the American small presses. Arizona\u2019s landscape and wildlife became increasingly important to him both as a source of pleasure and a measure of how precarious the natural world is.<\/strong>
