He was the pearl she boasted, whom she lifted from clay<\/p>\n

with a word, like God, from evidence of worms,<\/p>\n

his beauty got neither for work, nor trade,<\/p>\n

gift from the reach of a hand.<\/p>\n

Had she powers, she would have sung <\/p>\n

enchantments to the hole in the bottom of the sea, <\/p>\n

seen all the ocean sunk, if only he <\/p>\n

were sheltered in the sawdust of her palm \u2013 <\/p>\n

in time, made coral of his bones, a spotless pearl <\/p>\n

of that one eye, of his contours, trappings <\/p>\n

like cells, rocks, islands \u2013 caskets where we dwell \u2013 <\/p>\n

seen not the pearl is also shell, mere stuff, <\/p>\n

coffer we hold, jewel we mourn, account its center lost<\/p>\n

when its roundness rolls away from us in the grass,<\/p>\n

vanishes in the ground.<\/strong><\/p>\n
