\n 
\nOnce upon a time
\nI was a fig.
\n 
\n(Yes, a fig)
\n 
\nFull of little flowers inside,
\nPlenty of endless dreams
\n 
\nI was born
\nIn a casual tree
\nof those that nobody grooms,
\nof those that never gets rain,
\nof those that drain you to death.
\n 
\nShrivelled,
\npunished by birds
\nwho picked on my white sweaty sweetness
\nand left me scarred,
\nbut made me stronger.
\n 
\nOne day,
\nan arrogant orange,
\nof a garden nearby,
\ncalled for a meeting of peers
\nand suggested the idea
\nof forming a fruital system.
\n 
\n(Yes, a fruital system)
\n 
\nThe rest of fruits agreed.
\n 
\nSo, the orange stood in the centre,
\ncause she was too tangy to spin.
\n 
\nEveryone else
\ncame forward
\nin a perfect queue
\nthat started to curl
\ncoiling outwards
\naround the self-proclaimed star.
\n 
\nThe apple, the peach, the pear,
\nthe lemon and even the grape
\nfound quickly a place
\nin a galaxy they called
\n“The Juicy Way”.
\n 
\nThey all looked so lush,
\nimmaculate,
\ndivine,
\nwaitrosy,
\nas they floated
\nin their glorious ether
\nof mechanically smooth subjects.
\n 
\nI want a place in this system,<\/em>
\nI said,
\nI want to be an aster too,
\nI deserve to be there,
\nrotating
\nin harmony
\nwith you.<\/em>
\n 
\nThe apple and some others
\nstarted to giggle
\nwith patronising
\nswivel-eye disdain.
\n 
\nI am sorry my love,<\/em>
\nsaid the eloquent
\nsmily
\nsunny leader,
\nbut this is a fruital system
\nwhere everything works
\nout of our own
\n 
\ncombined
\n 
\naccord.
\n 
\nEveryone wins,
\n 
\neveryone contributes.
\n 
\nThe magnetic fields
\nof our respective masses
\nare already balanced.
\n 
\nthat is why we levitate up here,
\nso graciously.
\n 
\nIf we take you on,
\nwe will have to open the floodgates
\nof the universe.
\n 
\nHow many more fruits
\ncould we feasibly accommodate?
\n<\/em> 
\nSo, after this rational rejection,
\nI had no choice,
\nbut to become
\na zero-hours planet,
\nalso known as a comet.
\n 
\n(Yes, a comet)
\n 
\nSo now,
\nI am a wrinkly wild comet
\nfull of odd rugged cracks.
\nI am not round,
\nnot even pear shaped,
\nI have no clouds,
\nno satellites,
\nno green bits,
\nno rings of dust,
\nno frozen lakes of gas…
\n 
\nbut I don’t give a shit..
\n 
\nI am the cock of the universe,
\nplanets fear my freedom,
\nno one knows my trajectory,
\nit is hard to land on my surface,
\nI come and go as I please.
\n 
\nIf the calculating master of creation
\nmesses about with my equations
\nI may just crash on him,
\nor in one of his gardenly planets.
\n 
\nWho knows?
\n 
\nIf some shepherds see my tale,
\nflying in the night
\nin the skies in winter,
\nthey may grant me godly status
\nan invent a religion
\nat my place of collision.
\n 
\nWho knows?
\n 
\nI have nothing to lose.
\n 
\nI am a wrinkly wild comet,
\nI am a pirate in an orderly show of stars
\nwho learnt their moves
\nin the youtube version
\nof the Book of Genesis.
\n 
\nUnlike them,
\nI am my own choreographer.
\n 
\nOnly infinite heavens will tell you
\nwhat I am made of!
\n 
\nSimple!
\n 
\nWatch me!
\n 
\nAs I fly!
\n

\nTony Martin-Woods started to write poetry in 2012, at the age of 43, driven by his political indignation. That same year he also set in motion Poes\u00eda Indignada (Transforming with Poetry), an online publication of political poetry that he edits. Tony is a political and artistic activist who explores the digital component of our lives as a means to support critical human empowerment. He is also known in the UK for his work as an academic and educator under his non-literary name. He writes in English and Spanish and is due to publish his first book of poems in 2016.
