\nA roadrunner has climbed the concrete slope
\nfrom roadside weeds to where it meets
\nthe bridge\u2019s horizontal, and he stops
\nwith his beak directed
\nat the angle in which a patch of sky
\nilluminates his profile.
\n

\nThe yellow and the white lines meet
\nstraight ahead at perspective\u2019s
\nfarthest point, where blue mountains divide
\nEarth from the storms
\nabout to break in Heaven.
\n

\nAlong the rails that run beside
\nthe interstate, an eastbound freight train
\nleaves daylight behind it
\nas clouds churn into the sky
\nwith red lightning inside them.
\n

\nA nighthawk\u2019s wing
\nabove the traffic flow
\nslides between the day
\nand a night of endless
\ntaillights.<\/strong>

\nDavid Chorlton was born in Austria, grew up in Manchester, England, and lived for several years in Vienna before moving to Phoenix in 1978. Arizona\u2019s landscapes and wildlife have become increasingly important to him and a significant part of his poetry. His Selected Poems from FutureCycle Press appeared in 2014. The shadow side of Vienna provides the core of The Taste of Fog, a work of fiction published by Rain Mountain Press. And the poem follows<\/strong>
