Bleak,<br \/>\ndrizzly. Black mist over<br \/>\nMeadow Farm. Grass<br \/>\nflattened, matted as in<br \/>\nhours straw will be in the<br \/>\nfoaling shed, a dark rose<br \/>\nspreading under the mare&#8217;s<br \/>\nheaving sighs<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWET GRASS DARKENING<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthe walk past the barn<br \/>\nas blood would matted<br \/>\nstraw before it was<br \/>\nlight again. Two figures<br \/>\ncross the lawn, the<br \/>\nwildness of geese in the<br \/>\ndistance. The men<br \/>\nget in a car. One bulb<br \/>\nhangs in the foaling shed.<br \/>\nUnder the almost<br \/>\njade slopes roots are<br \/>\ngrowing. The mare<br \/>\ncalms herself with groan<br \/>\nsongs as milk begins<br \/>\nto wax, pearls on<br \/>\nher nipples like<br \/>\n a bud opening<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nTHRU MIST, ONE LIGHT IN THE FOALING BARN<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthe drizzle, close to freezing.<br \/>\nIn barn 17 A, the brood<br \/>\nmare, Somethingroyal,<br \/>\ncarries  the last foal of Bold<br \/>\nRuler, dying in Kentucky.<br \/>\nMilk on her nipples. if<br \/>\nthe rafters. If rafters could<br \/>\ntalk they would be singing<br \/>\nsoon he will be yours and<br \/>\nyou must take care of<br \/>\nwhat you&#8217;ve been given<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nTHRU DAMP FIELDS PERFUMED WITH OAK LEAVES<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthe men moved thru drizzle<br \/>\nto barn 17 A, moved over<br \/>\ngravel in grey fog, moved<br \/>\ntoward the one light. The<br \/>\nmare was breathing fast.<br \/>\nshe was warm and sweaty,<br \/>\nedgy. She was circling<br \/>\nas if caged. Then she was<br \/>\nlying on her side. Then it<br \/>\nwas just a heart beat before<br \/>\nthe tip of a foot burst into<br \/>\nflower, the first petal  of<br \/>\nwhat would flower<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nMARCH 30, JUST PAST MIDNIGHT<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nShe was warm and her<br \/>\nnostrils, wild.  Ready,<br \/>\nnearly ready. Only<br \/>\nthe mare&#8217;s breath like<br \/>\na silence you could<br \/>\nunderstand. The mare<br \/>\non straw on her side<br \/>\nand just past midnight<br \/>\nthe tip of one foot.<br \/>\nThen,  gently as some<br \/>\none kissing eyes that<br \/>\nare crying, the foaling<br \/>\nman reached in to ease<br \/>\na folded leg out of the<br \/>\nbirth canal<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nONCE THE SHOULDER EMERGED<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthe men moved closer in the<br \/>\nlong blue damp wind. Blood<br \/>\non the warm straw. The mare&#8217;s<br \/>\nbody opening. The men pull<br \/>\ngently. Slosh of water and<br \/>\nthen the foal&#8217; s slippery body,<br \/>\niodine and the smell of birth<br \/>\nin the wind the minutes<br \/>\nafter midnight. &#8220;A wooper,&#8221;<br \/>\nsome. &#8221; &#8220;white feet, a lovely<br \/>\ncolt,&#8221; in Secretariat&#8217;s record<br \/>\nfan book. &#8220;Lovely,&#8221; was<br \/>\nunderlined twice.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nPAST WILLOWS ON THE MOST WESTERN EDGE OF THE FARM<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe mare&#8217;s udder swells<br \/>\nwith milk, something<br \/>\nwax like drying on her<br \/>\nnipples like the just<br \/>\npolished swirls of wood.<br \/>\nAfter her wild breath,<br \/>\nthe heaving, the blood,<br \/>\nthree feet and a star,<br \/>\ndark flowers of his hair<br \/>\nagainst the drained mare<br \/>\nfalling back easily as<br \/>\nthe wind rising up<br \/>\nfrom North Anna&#8217;s<br \/>\nRiver<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nRIVETED TO SECRETARIAT&#8217;S BURSTING FORTH<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nthose easing him from<br \/>\nSomethingroyal&#8217;s body<br \/>\nsaid he was on his feet<br \/>\nin twenty minutes, in<br \/>\n45 he was nursing. &#8220;Big<br \/>\nstrong, male foal with<br \/>\nplenty of bone.&#8221; Warm<br \/>\nbreath of horses, Carolina<br \/>\nRiverwind. In her log,<br \/>\nElizabeth Ham the farm<br \/>\nsecretary wrote &#8220;well<br \/>\nmade colt, good straight<br \/>\nhind legs, good shoulders,<br \/>\ngood quarters: you<br \/>\nhave to like him.&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nIN PENNY CHENNERY&#8217;S NOTEBOOK AFTER THE NIGHT OF DRIZZLE, RAIN<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nas the river settled<br \/>\nand willow leaves<br \/>\nyellowed: one<br \/>\nword: Wow<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nWHEN A LEGGY FOAL COMES INTO THE WORLD<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nand cherry boughs are<br \/>\nswelling, hope flowers<br \/>\nlike these buds. When<br \/>\nthe foal seems different,<br \/>\nunlike others, who<br \/>\ndoesn&#8217;t dream it can<br \/>\ngo the distance, that a<br \/>\n&#8220;miracle has arrived&#8221;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHE WAS DIFFERENT<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nsomeone who was around<br \/>\nSecretariat from the time<br \/>\nof his birth said he was<br \/>\ndifferent. Just walking<br \/>\nthe horse in the paddock<br \/>\nit was as if the wind<br \/>\ntongued the cups of his<br \/>\nears and he a flash, if the<br \/>\nhandler lost focus, the<br \/>\nhorse knew it<br \/>\nand was gone<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nJUST WALKING THE HORSE TO THE PADDOCK<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\na bruiser some<br \/>\none said bigger than<br \/>\nthe other foals his age.<br \/>\nHis legs barely<br \/>\ntouched the ground<br \/>\nunder the shiny trees.<br \/>\nHe could cuff the other<br \/>\nfoals, bite and<br \/>\nkick . He was playing.<br \/>\nLicked by his<br \/>\nmare, not only at<br \/>\nbirth but long after<br \/>\nwith everyone touching<br \/>\nand holding him he<br \/>\ngrew bolder,<br \/>\nconfident<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nHE HAD A MIND OF HIS OWN<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nwild for something<br \/>\ndeep in the bodies of<br \/>\ntrees. He&#8217;d bolt in<br \/>\na breathbeat. &#8220;A very<br \/>\naggressive type colt.&#8221;<br \/>\nJazz in the air. Ghostly,<br \/>\nmagical. A loop thru his<br \/>\nhalter to keep him in<br \/>\ncheck<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nON THAT FIRST DAY WAS SOMETHING ROYAL<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nhis mare panting?<br \/>\npuzzled? Those huge<br \/>\nshoulders. Something<br \/>\nshe couldn&#8217;t see<br \/>\nquivering thru her.<br \/>\nThe mare had foaled<br \/>\neasily before but<br \/>\nthis time, even with<br \/>\nher feet on the dirt floor,<br \/>\neasier footing than<br \/>\ncement but this time<br \/>\nwith the foal&#8217;s fore leg<br \/>\nfolded like a petal<br \/>\nbefore it opens,<br \/>\nsomeone following<br \/>\nthe mare&#8217;s contractions<br \/>\ngently eased him out of<br \/>\nthe birth canal.
