A Poem by Frederick Pollack."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Bored, with the boredom of eternity,<br \/>\nDonatien Alphonse Fran\u00e7ois, Marquis de Sade,<br \/>\nand Leopold Ritter von Sacher-Masoch<br \/>\nhang out. They have little in common \u2013<br \/>\nnothing, according to Deleuze \u2013<br \/>\nbut shared experience of psych wards<br \/>\ncreates a bond. And Sade<br \/>\nis always tickled by the moralism<br \/>\nof his scholarly socialist philosemitic pal.<br \/>\n(\u201cContracts\u201d for bondage-and-discipline sessions,<br \/>\nthe invention of the \u201csafe word\u201d\u2013<br \/>\nparbleu!) Masoch for his part<br \/>\nfinds the Frenchman\u2019s wit<br \/>\ninstructive, and accepts with grace<br \/>\nhis constant teasing; it fulfills a certain need.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nLike other dead white Europeans,<br \/>\nthey float over to America<br \/>\n(which, they have heard, is diverting and unserious).<br \/>\nSade preens: \u201cMy principles have triumphed!<br \/>\nWhat other people is as devoted to freedom?\u201d<br \/>\nHis companion demurs. \u201cIt may seem so,<br \/>\nbut note: the whip is unpopular,<br \/>\nhypocrisy remains the spice of shame,<br \/>\ntortures are generally banal, and women \u2013<br \/>\nstill bound to the paternalism you despised \u2013<br \/>\nare seldom given equal rights to them.<br \/>\nThis is far,\u201d he adds, \u201cfrom the vision<br \/>\nof your revolutionary pamphlet, Citizens!<br \/>\nYet One More Effort If You Would Be Truly Republican!\u201d<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe mood of the mercurial marquis<br \/>\nturns. \u201cThey\u2019re afraid of their masters,\u201d<br \/>\nhe sighs. \u201cWhose existence\u201d \u2013<br \/>\nthus Masoch, disapprovingly \u2013 \u201cthey deny.\u201d<br \/>\nThey are not watching in real time,<br \/>\never-tedious, but from the long end of a spectrum<br \/>\nwhere essences appear like subtitles.<br \/>\nThere the prevailing mood is an orange haze;<br \/>\nand the steady pop of small arms<br \/>\na rhythmic growl, like the machinery<br \/>\nthe two friends had expected.<br \/>\nSlowly they realize it is a machine,<br \/>\ndispensing souls to each side of the trigger<br \/>\nbefore they need determine their own nature.<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Frederick-Pollock-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Frederick-Pollock-1-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"Frederick Pollock 1\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Frederick-Pollock-1-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Frederick-Pollock-1-119x150.jpg 119w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Frederick-Pollock-1-400x500.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.artvilla.com\/plt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Frederick-Pollock-1.jpg 767w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Author of two book-length narrative poems, THE ADVENTURE and HAPPINESS, both published by Story Line Press.
