7<\/b><\/span>\r\n\r\nThe Dusk Casts Shadows<\/b><\/span>\r\n\r\nThe dusk casts shadows on the drowning sun,<\/b><\/span>\r\nTitanic's<\/i> lights ablaze.  She cleaves the sea,<\/b><\/span>\r\na mirror to the stars, her maiden run <\/b><\/span>\r\nserene success by some divine decree.<\/b><\/span>\r\nThe falling swell has passed, the past astern.<\/b><\/span>\r\nThe last two days will spell \u201cThe Promised Land\u201d<\/b><\/span>\r\neach Steerage soul must face with some concern, <\/b><\/span>\r\nwith little else but landing grant in hand.<\/b><\/span>\r\nIn First, astern the barren promenade,<\/b><\/span>\r\nthe after-mast casts light in frosty arcs<\/b><\/span>\r\non Ida Straus *, her furs, her pale pomade,<\/b><\/span>\r\nand Isidor, in arm, as she remarks,<\/b><\/span>\r\nbefore retiring to the plush saloon, <\/b><\/span>\r\n\u201cThe sea\u2019s like glass this Sunday night.  No moon.\u201d<\/b><\/span>\r\n***\r\n\r\n***\r\n8<\/b><\/span>\r\n\u201cIceberg dead ahead!\u201d<\/b><\/span>\r\n[11:40 p.m. April 14 1912] <\/b><\/span>\r\n\r\n         \u201cThe sea is calm tonight, <\/span><\/b><\/span>\r\n          The tide is full, the moon lies fair \r\n                         Upon the straits; \u2026\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/span>\r\n\r\n          Matthew Arnold, Dover Beach (1867)<\/span><\/b><\/span>\r\n\r\nThe sea\u2019s like glass this Sunday night. No moon<\/b><\/span>\r\ncasts light upon the ice-pocked sea, where stars<\/b><\/span>\r\nare cast in bituminous black, in tune<\/b><\/span>\r\nwith Ages Past. Titanic <\/i>flat-out scars<\/b><\/span>\r\nthe glassy sea her raking bowsprit cleaves:<\/b><\/span>\r\nher splashing wake\u2019s so cold her passengers <\/b><\/span>\r\nmust flee the promenades the starlight leaves<\/b><\/span>\r\nin livid darkness.... where nothing stirs,<\/b><\/span>\r\nand nothing stays the artificial breeze<\/b><\/span>\r\nthat snakes along the hull, and takes its pulse<\/b><\/span>\r\non brittle rivets, frozen; so they seize<\/b><\/span>\r\nupon the berg Titanic<\/i> can\u2019t repulse.<\/b><\/span>\r\n   Fleet * alerts the bridge, \u201cIceberg dead ahead!\u201d<\/b><\/span>\r\n   \u201cAstern!\u201d  Propellers lash.  The iceberg 's fled. \r\n\r\n***\r\n\r\n***\r\n\r\n<\/b><\/span><\/pre>\n
