MARGUERITE

\nRemember how you longed to be a Marguerite
\nGautier? Burned on my brain, the strangeness of your face
\nOn that first date when we went out to eat:
\nLight-hearted night with none thereafter to take its place.
\n 
\nYour lips, smeared scarlet with a crude lipstick replete
\nWith purple, sipped champagne with exquisite grace
\nFrom finest crystal while you plucked a . . . yes, marguerite:
\n\u201cHe loves me, he loves me not . . .\u201d You knew quite well the case.
\n 
\nAnd then, hysterical flower, how you laughed and cried:
\nThose laughs, your scents, your moans\u2014ah, they were all for me!
\nYour kisses and your tears seemed on my mouth to stay.
\n 
\nAnd one sad afternoon when days were sweet, you died.
\nTo see if you loved me, Death, in his jealousy,
\nPlucked you, like a marguerite of love, away!

\nTus labios escarlatas de p\u00farpura maldita
\nsorb\u00edan el champa\u00f1a del fino baccarat;
\ntus dedos deshojaban la blanca margarita,
\n\u00abS\u00ed… no… s\u00ed… no…\u00bb \u00a1y sab\u00edas que te adoraba ya!

\nDespu\u00e9s, \u00a1oh flor de Histeria! llorabas y re\u00edas;
\ntus besos y tus l\u00e1grimas tuve en mi boca yo;
\ntus risas, tus fragancias, tus quejas, eran m\u00edas.
